Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Deluxe Edition

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Deluxe Edition

When was the last time you were truly captivated by the presentation of a new AAA game, especially if it was a fresh IP? Personally, the only one that comes to mind is Pragmata from Capcom. However, since then its release has been postponed and postponed until it finally melted away into uncertainty.

And then, when I had almost come to terms with the idea that nothing truly new and interesting would come out in this segment in the near future, and all the projects would be like carbon copies, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 suddenly appeared. An ambitious JRPG with an impressive budget, an unusual world and, what is especially intriguing, created by a young French studio. You must admit, it sounds at least unconventional – and this is what hooked me. In this post, I have collected everything that is known about the game at the moment. I hope you will also be interested in following this project.

The French studio Sandfall Interactive was founded in 2020. Its team is still modest – about 36 employees, not counting freelancers. However, the small size is compensated by a strong team: the backbone of the studio is made up of former Ubisoft developers who decided to leave a large corporation for the sake of creative freedom and the opportunity to implement their own ideas. The guys from Sandfall are real JRPG fans, and this is obvious to the naked eye. On the official website, in the Team section, you can find a selection of favorite games of all team members – a very heartfelt detail that allows you to get to know the people behind the project a little better.

In addition, the site has a blog where the team has been sharing the development process of their game from the very beginning – since the time when it did not even have a name. Now the project already has a name – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and it even has its own page. There you can take a funny mini-test and subscribe to the newsletter. By the way, the subscription is not just for show — for example, I was immediately sent wallpapers, a mini-album with music from the trailer, and concept art that you can’t find anywhere else. In the letters, the developers call subscribers “expeditors” — cute, isn’t it?

By the way, Sandfall’s team of community managers works very sensitively. I looked at their social networks — and everywhere there is a warm atmosphere, thanks for the feedback, sincere answers to questions (if there is something to answer, of course). These seem to be little things, but they create a feeling that you are respected and appreciated. The publisher of the game is a young, but already proven company Kepler Interactive. They have such projects as Sifu, Scorn, and Pacific Drive under their belt. It was Kepler who helped Sandfall rent offices — this allowed the team to expand and spread its wings a little.

The studio received funding not only from the publisher. In its piggy bank:

  • a grant of $50,000 from Epic Games under the Epic Megagrants program
  • support from the CNC — National Center for Cinema and Animation
  • as well as help from the regional authorities of Occitania

In general, Sandfall is doing pretty well: there is money for development, the team is working with passion, and the players are treated humanely. It seems that they really can make something special.

What is known about the new jet-propelled JRPG: features of the combat system and world exploration

For their first game, the development team decided not to follow the beaten path. Instead of another “typical” JRPG, they are betting on something fresh and, in their words, unique – a reactive combat system that combines elements of turn-based tactics and real-time action. The application is serious, even a little daring, but you must admit – few people want to promote their project with the words “we just have normal combat”. So the pathos is most likely part of the strategy. And, if it comes to that, for the desire to surprise – a plus in their karma.

The developers describe the game as follows:

What is known about the heroes of Expedition 33

“This new JRPG combines real-time action with classic turn-based combat. Create a unique expedition using a variety of equipment, skills, stats, and interactions between your party members. Master defense systems – dodge, parry, and counterattack in real time – to turn the tide of battle in your favor. Build combos by mastering attack rhythms, and target your opponent’s weak points with the free aiming system.”

If we try to translate this from advertising to human, then we are in for a symbiosis of two combat schools: tactical depth with planning of moves – like in the classics of the genre – and the acuteness of the moment when you need to press a button in time to avoid a blow or inflict a critical hit. Not just “attack and wait”, but something closer to interactive choreography, where rhythm, reaction and accuracy are important. It seems that each fight here is a small improvisation, in which much depends on how well you know the mechanics and feel the pace. Attentive gamers have already begun to draw parallels with famous representatives of the genre. Superficially, the interface really evokes associations with the latest parts of Persona – bright menus, stylish presentation, an emphasis on tactical planning. But the gameplay in the trailer reminded more experienced fans of the good old classics like Lost Odyssey, Legend of Dragoon and Shadow Hearts – games in which “reactivity” was already an important part of battles. It’s an interesting mix of ideas, and it will be really interesting to see how the French studio adapts the Japanese legacy to its own idea of a modern JRPG.

But the combat system alone won’t fill you up – what the player does between battles is also important. And here the developers also shared some information. The following description can be found on the official project page:

“Explore a bewitching world populated by surreal enemies. As you travel through breathtaking landscapes, from the Isle of Many Faces to the Forgotten Battlefield, discover hidden quests and solve mysteries. Find allies among creatures of legend and meet unique companions, use new ways to travel, and uncover hidden locations on the map.”

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Deluxe Edition System Requirements

Sounds like a classic set for a story-driven JRPG with an emphasis on atmosphere and exploration: colorful locations, mysterious places, hidden areas, lots of NPCs that can be recruited into the team, and, probably, personal storylines for each of them. Most likely, there will be riddles, and quests with forks, and some secrets that can only be found if you do not just run along the map by the marker, but really look into the details of the world.

Separately, “new ways of movement” are mentioned – and this is already a hint at possible mechanics like mounts, flying machines, teleports or, maybe, even mechanical puzzles. Well, if the developers have at least a drop of “Ubisoft blood” in their veins – expect “towers”, camps and other points of interest from which pieces of the map open up and side quests are given out. Overall, the game promises to be a real cocktail of ideas: a mix of turn-based strategy, real-time dynamics, Persona-style visuals, old-school Japanese RPG philosophy, plot exploration, and probably open-world elements. And if they implement at least half of this at a good level, it will be at least a decent title. And perhaps a real hidden hit.

What is known about the heroes of Expedition 33: style, characters and acting

The other day I came across a funny squabble on Japanese Twitter. One user, inspired by the trailer, decided to get outraged: they say that Western developers, in his opinion, have appropriated the spirit of Japanese game development again. Soon one of the commentators wittily put him in his place: they say, if this were an American game, we would not see such beautiful female characters. And indeed, Western studios have recently been much more interested in the agenda than in aesthetics. And here, it seems, everything is in its place. The character design immediately catches your attention. It is not shocking, does not strive to squeeze out the “wow effect” at any cost, but at the same time remains bright and memorable. The heroines look expressive, but are not overloaded with fan service, the costumes are stylish and functional at the same time. I was especially pleased with the form of the expedition: it is logical within the setting, but at the same time emphasizes the individuality of each team member. The girls turned out expressive, each image is read at first glance. And Gustave… well, Pattinson from a parallel universe, no less. Only gloomier.

What is known about the new jet-propelled JRPG

Some may find fault with the proportions – they say the heads are too big. Perhaps. But compared to the comic book bad taste that beloved franchises like Dragon Age are turning into, everything looks much more harmonious here. You don’t need to be an artist to understand – the authors clearly tried to maintain a balance between style and recognition. With the trailer, we were given the first sample of the voice acting. And it is, I must say, promising. The voices of Ben Starr and Jennifer English have already been dubbed by fans as “Clive Rosfield meets Shadowheart”, and the comparison – albeit a meme – quite accurately conveys the level of performance. I want to believe that the entire cast will maintain the same quality bar. Because without strong acting, you won’t get far in storytelling.

On the official Expedition 33 website, as well as on Steam, you can already read short descriptions of the current team members. So far, only four characters have been presented, but the developers from Sandfall Interactive promise to add new heroes and cards to the existing ones over time. So, if you like to follow the development of the world even before the game is released, there is a reason to look there more often. It is also interesting how the main character is presented. Gustave is not just the leader of the squad, but also the link between all the members of the expedition. According to the developers, it is the player who will have to build relationships with each of the partners, which may mean the presence of side quests that reveal their characters, backstory and internal conflicts. And perhaps something more. Romances, for example. After all, we are on a post-apocalyptic earth, and when the world collapses, people tend to reach out to each other.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Deluxe Edition review

Although there is no need to rush to hope either. For example, the red-haired Mael is immediately excluded from romantic options: firstly, she considers Gustave her brother, and secondly, she is only 16. So, Persona fans and other lovers of controversial plots – relax and think about something else. The emphasis here is clearly not on cheap sensationalism, but on deep drama. Other characters – Lune and Ciel – have simple stories at first glance. But behind their motives, more complex psychological backgrounds can be seen. These are not just heroes with a “difficult past”, but full-fledged individuals whose views, fears and doubts will collide with each other as the plot progresses. And it is through such clashes that the world of the game is revealed – gloomy, post-apocalyptic, where the remnants of civilization are trying to preserve a human face.

All this sets a very ambitious bar. Expedition 33 seems to be more than just a pretty wrapper, but a project with a serious claim to a well-developed lore, interesting relationships within the team, and an atmosphere that holds attention not only with graphics, but also with history. We can only hope that the final version will live up to expectations. So far, it looks promising.

Dark world and philosophy of death in new indie game

The world we are shown immediately grabs our attention with its atmosphere – it is both attractive and disturbing. Here, people have long since gotten used to the idea of early death. Everyone knows exactly how much time they have left – and how much time their loved ones have left. This is not a horror story, but part of everyday reality. Every year, the maximum life expectancy is reduced, and the extinction of humanity no longer seems distant and hypothetical – it is already on the threshold. There is no escape from this. Fate seems programmed, and it is impossible to change it. Think about it – if you knew the exact date of death of your relatives and yourself, how would this affect you? Apparently, Guillaume Broch, the head of development, often asked himself this question. It is not for nothing that his favorite game is Persona 3, which also raises the theme of death and inevitability.

It all started with the mysterious Artist. Every year she writes a new number on a huge monolith – and with this number comes death. No one has yet managed to get to her. Who is she? Just a person with a twisted sense of duty? Or something completely different, alien to human logic and emotions? And if we can’t even understand it, how can we fight what is beyond our perception? The trailer creates an oppressive atmosphere, but at the same time there is still a spark of hope in it. The chance of success for the new mission — the twenty-first in a row — seems negligible. But there is faith that it will at least clear the way for the next one — the thirty-second.

Dark world and philosophy of death in new indie game

So far, not much is known about the world, but it is already amazing. I am glued to the concept art and individual frames from the trailer — everything in them seems to have been painted by that very Artist. The space here is strange, nonlinear — it twists, then falls apart, then spreads, like paint on a canvas. One location impressed me the most: it resembles the seabed, but the objects in it do not behave as if they are underwater. And instead of sand and shells, there are flowers that would be more suitable for meadows. This deliberate absurdity gives the scene a special charm: you seem to recognize the familiar, but through a strange distortion of the dream.

And yet this dream is far from harmless. The developers warn in advance about the content that may affect sensitive players. The game contains:

  • scenes of violence,
  • images of blood,
  • suicide themes,
  • disturbing and frightening visual images.

So if you decide to plunge into this world, be prepared – it will not let you go without a trace.
