But a new hero comes onto the stage – Nero, and everything shifts a little from the usual axis.

A gray-haired swordsman in a cloak – at first it seems that this is Dante in his youth. And only after a while you understand: no, there is a different character in front of you. Yes, he is also charismatic, he also masterfully wields a sword and shoots on the fly, but his gimmick is Devil Bringer. This is not just a hand, it is an instrument of humiliation. It grabs enemies, pulls them across half the screen and slams them into the nearest wall with all its might. And it is so effective that you want to pause and watch the replay again. Devil Bringer changes the very mechanics of battles. With its help, you can not just hit, but control the battle space: attract enemies, arrange air combos, move around the level. And in this, Nero wins over Dante — at least at first. Dante is given the chance to play later, and then an internal struggle begins: on the one hand, he is the beloved hero of the previous parts, on the other, the controls, which at first make you want to cry. He doesn’t have Devil Bringer, but his hands are just itching to grab someone and throw them. You have to relearn.

Nevertheless, Dante remains himself — he has the same arsenal, four fighting styles, the ability to juggle enemies with swords and firearms. It’s just that now, after Nero, he feels different. Less convenient, but still spectacular and powerful. And what about the rest? Everything is as always — both in a good and not so good way. The levels are linear, enemies appear strictly on schedule, bosses are formidable, but they are defeated with the same passion as ten years ago. The camera still lives its own life, sometimes interfering, but more often — adding drive. And the musical accompaniment gets the blood pumping: when heavy rock flirts with electronics, you understand – it’s time to chop up the devils into vinaigrette.

In battle, Nero looks like a world champion in gymnastics, he somersaults with such grace that Nemov would be jealous. And the way he hangs in the air, simultaneously slashing with a sword and firing a revolver – it’s just a movie. You don’t have to memorize the buttons – the battle system is intuitive, combos fall into your fingers by themselves, and the game encourages improvisation. The main thing is not to be afraid to press everything in a row. It turns out beautifully and, what is important, effectively. Nero’s love for firearms seems to be innate. His Blue Rose is a powerful revolver, from which he happily shoots demons while hovering somewhere under the ceiling. But it’s not that simple – bullets, no matter how good they are, are no substitute for a sword. The balance will not let you complete the game by shooting from a safe distance. You will have to get into the thick of it, swing your sword, use Devil Bringer and think on the fly. This is what makes the fights truly exciting.

As for the difficulty – Capcom clearly decided not to scare anyone anymore. After the hardcore of DMC 3, the fourth part is perceived as a walk in the park. For the first time, difficulty levels with a clear division appeared: Human Hunter – for those who just want to enjoy the game, Devil Hunter – for veterans who remember all the secrets of the previous parts. The better you prove yourself in battle, the greater the reward. The speed of passage, combat style, hit rate and other nuances are taken into account. The system motivates not just to run forward, but to do it with grace. If you want to feel like an action movie star — dance with a sword beautifully, like in the best trailers.

Nevertheless, the system is loyal. Even if you failed a level, got a “C” or “D” rank, and your combat was more like a showdown in a back alley than a demonstration of martial arts, you will still get a reward. Yes, maybe not very generous, but enough for something. And then it’s a matter of choice: invest Proud Souls in new moves, unlock powerful attacks, or first upgrade those you already have. The game does not force you – it gives you tools, and how you use them depends only on you. Want to complete the game on basic combos without a single purchase? Good luck. Theoretically possible. In practice – pure masochism.

The graphics of DMC 4 are a separate song. Despite the fact that the levels sometimes feel intimate and narrow, the overall visual picture is catchy. Each location is made with attention to detail, and the style changes as you progress: from gloomy medieval castles to snowy plains, and then to bright tropical thickets. All this is accompanied by a rich color palette that literally breaks out of the screen. The colors are not just bright – they live, breathe, create an atmosphere. This is especially cool in combination with the lighting, which is presented with intelligence and taste.

And now attention – cut scenes. In DMC 4, they are not cut or made in advance – everything is rendered on the game engine in real time. And this is not a weak point, but on the contrary – a reason for pride. The Japanese have proven that they can not only stage a beautiful scene, but also bring characters to life in a way that others have never dreamed of. Facial animation here is at an incredible level. Characters express emotions not only with words, but also with facial expressions – and you believe them. Add to this the exquisite work with light and shadows: soft highlights, halftones, accents – everything like in a movie. Dante is here too, and while his image is controversial, it would be unfair to deny his cult status. He’s still that same indestructible joker that you either adore or hate.

The graphics in DMC 4 were a real breakthrough at the time of its release.
