Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition

Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition

Dante, the permanent hero of three and a half parts of Devil May Cry, seems to have come from the pages of a manga or anime frames. His recognizable image: a bright red cloak with metal rivets, leather pants, a massive sword with a skull on the handle, platinum hair and signature Ebony & Ivory pistols – like a magnet for fans of glossy heroes. Bishonen from other universes are already nervously smoking on the sidelines, reproaching Capcom for borrowing. As proof, Vash from Trigun shows off his cloak, and Alucard from Hellsing modestly hints at a sense of humor and an impressive arsenal. But all in vain – Dante continues to remain an icon for Japanese girls … and, let’s face it, for many guys too.

The result is predictable. Young fans time after time bleach their hair to be at least a little similar to the idol, and female fans tirelessly draw art with his participation and publish them on the Internet. Dante is not just a character, but a cultural phenomenon. The vicious circle of fan love, inspiration and imitation is complete.

Devil May Cry 4 is a shining example of how the Japanese from Capcom know how to not reinvent the wheel, but polish the old one to a mirror shine. They have been making essentially the same game for many years now – and no one complains. Moreover, each new release of the series is met not with a yawn, but with impatience. Why? Because Devil May Cry is not just a slasher. It is a masterpiece in its genre. It has everything as it should be: style, drive, action, charisma, crazy combos, devilishly cool heroes and an atmosphere that you immerse yourself in. Capcom understands this and, without further ado, serves us a familiar dish on a platter – maybe slightly warmed up, but with a new side dish. At first glance, DMC 4 painfully resembles the previous part. The same gothic decorations, the same extreme degree of pathos, the same circus acrobatics with demons flying in different directions. But a new hero comes onto the stage – Nero, and everything shifts a little from the usual axis.

A gray-haired swordsman in a cloak – at first it seems that this is Dante in his youth. And only after a while you understand: no, there is a different character in front of you. Yes, he is also charismatic, he also masterfully wields a sword and shoots on the fly, but his gimmick is Devil Bringer. This is not just a hand, it is an instrument of humiliation. It grabs enemies, pulls them across half the screen and slams them into the nearest wall with all its might. And it is so effective that you want to pause and watch the replay again. Devil Bringer changes the very mechanics of battles. With its help, you can not just hit, but control the battle space: attract enemies, arrange air combos, move around the level. And in this, Nero wins over Dante — at least at first. Dante is given the chance to play later, and then an internal struggle begins: on the one hand, he is the beloved hero of the previous parts, on the other, the controls, which at first make you want to cry. He doesn’t have Devil Bringer, but his hands are just itching to grab someone and throw them. You have to relearn.

Nevertheless, Dante remains himself — he has the same arsenal, four fighting styles, the ability to juggle enemies with swords and firearms. It’s just that now, after Nero, he feels different. Less convenient, but still spectacular and powerful. And what about the rest? Everything is as always — both in a good and not so good way. The levels are linear, enemies appear strictly on schedule, bosses are formidable, but they are defeated with the same passion as ten years ago. The camera still lives its own life, sometimes interfering, but more often — adding drive. And the musical accompaniment gets the blood pumping: when heavy rock flirts with electronics, you understand – it’s time to chop up the devils into vinaigrette.

In battle, Nero looks like a world champion in gymnastics, he somersaults with such grace that Nemov would be jealous. And the way he hangs in the air, simultaneously slashing with a sword and firing a revolver – it’s just a movie. You don’t have to memorize the buttons – the battle system is intuitive, combos fall into your fingers by themselves, and the game encourages improvisation. The main thing is not to be afraid to press everything in a row. It turns out beautifully and, what is important, effectively. Nero’s love for firearms seems to be innate. His Blue Rose is a powerful revolver, from which he happily shoots demons while hovering somewhere under the ceiling. But it’s not that simple – bullets, no matter how good they are, are no substitute for a sword. The balance will not let you complete the game by shooting from a safe distance. You will have to get into the thick of it, swing your sword, use Devil Bringer and think on the fly. This is what makes the fights truly exciting.

As for the difficulty – Capcom clearly decided not to scare anyone anymore. After the hardcore of DMC 3, the fourth part is perceived as a walk in the park. For the first time, difficulty levels with a clear division appeared: Human Hunter – for those who just want to enjoy the game, Devil Hunter – for veterans who remember all the secrets of the previous parts. Add a user-friendly interface, highlighted level exits, a clear minimap, and you get a slasher that doesn’t try to kill you at the start, but on the contrary, takes you by the hand and says: “Let’s go, it’ll be cool.” And yes, it will be cool. Devil May Cry 4 is still a stylish, cheerful, crazy action game, in which every murder is like a dance, and every fight is like a scene from an action movie filmed on steroids. Yes, the game can hardly be called a revolution. But it doesn’t try to be one. This is a continuation of a beloved story – with the same spirit, with new touches and a hero who is not ashamed to pass the baton.

Devil May Cry 4: How the leveling system and in-game currency have changed

In Devil May Cry 4, the developers finally overhauled the character leveling system — and this is, without a doubt, a step forward. If you recall how everything was before, especially in the classic parts of the series, a rather painful picture comes to mind: in order to get new techniques or strengthen the hero, you had to farm red orbs for hours. Sometimes this meant that you had to replay the mission several times, looking for every nook and cranny for pitiful crumbs. For some, this was a challenge, for others, a mockery. Some stubbornly continued, some arranged an emotional rage quit and put the disc aside until better times. But a new era has arrived in DMC 4. It was as if the Japanese game designers heard the collective cry of pain from fans and rid the game of unnecessary grinding. Red orbs are no longer used to level up skills. Now they play an auxiliary role — they serve as currency for buying essential items. Green life stars that restore health in battle, holy water that burns out all living things within range, or blue spheres that expand the health bar — that’s what it makes sense to spend these resources on now. And, frankly speaking, it’s much more logical and fair to the player.

And what replaced the old currency system? The main role is now played by Proud Souls — points that are awarded at the end of each mission. This is the basis for the development of the hero. If you want to open new combos, strengthen guns, make techniques more effective — save up these souls. But here everything is tied to your ability to play. The better you prove yourself in battle, the greater the reward. The speed of passage, combat style, hit rate and other nuances are taken into account. The system motivates not just to run forward, but to do it with grace. If you want to feel like an action movie star — dance with a sword beautifully, like in the best trailers.

Nevertheless, the system is loyal. Even if you failed a level, got a “C” or “D” rank, and your combat was more like a showdown in a back alley than a demonstration of martial arts, you will still get a reward. Yes, maybe not very generous, but enough for something. And then it’s a matter of choice: invest Proud Souls in new moves, unlock powerful attacks, or first upgrade those you already have. The game does not force you – it gives you tools, and how you use them depends only on you. Want to complete the game on basic combos without a single purchase? Good luck. Theoretically possible. In practice – pure masochism.

The graphics of DMC 4 are a separate song. Despite the fact that the levels sometimes feel intimate and narrow, the overall visual picture is catchy. Each location is made with attention to detail, and the style changes as you progress: from gloomy medieval castles to snowy plains, and then to bright tropical thickets. All this is accompanied by a rich color palette that literally breaks out of the screen. The colors are not just bright – they live, breathe, create an atmosphere. This is especially cool in combination with the lighting, which is presented with intelligence and taste.

And now attention – cut scenes. In DMC 4, they are not cut or made in advance – everything is rendered on the game engine in real time. And this is not a weak point, but on the contrary – a reason for pride. The Japanese have proven that they can not only stage a beautiful scene, but also bring characters to life in a way that others have never dreamed of. Facial animation here is at an incredible level. Characters express emotions not only with words, but also with facial expressions – and you believe them. Add to this the exquisite work with light and shadows: soft highlights, halftones, accents – everything like in a movie. No other game at the time of its release could boast such depth in the presentation of characters. As a result, DMC 4 is not just another slasher. It is a polished, stylish, smart game in which gameplay, leveling up and visuals work in harmony. It does not mock the player, but gives him space to grow. And the more you immerse yourself in it, the more you feel – yes, this is the same Devil May Cry that we have been waiting for.

Devil May Cry 4 – Is It Worth Playing in 2025?

When it comes to slashers, it’s hard to find a game that could seriously compete with DMC 4. It’s not just a pretty picture and a set of moves – it’s a real show, in which each fight feels like the final scene of an action movie. Capcom once again demonstrated that they are masters of their craft: the game hooks you literally from the first minutes and doesn’t let go until the final credits. Incredibly dynamic gameplay makes you keep your hands on the gamepad in tension – there is no room for boredom. Each battle turns into improvisation with swords, pistols and magic. A pleasant bonus – stylish finishing moves and a signature rating system for combat moves, which motivates you to play better and more spectacularly.

The characters are a separate story. They have enough charisma for three other games. The new protagonist, Nero, instantly sticks in your memory, and his demoness-hand is not just a gameplay element, but a full-fledged feature of the entire game. Dante is here too, and while his image is controversial, it would be unfair to deny his cult status. He’s still that same indestructible joker that you either adore or hate.

The graphics in DMC 4 were a real breakthrough at the time of its release. Vibrant locations, smooth animation and attention to detail create the feeling that you’re watching an expensive CGI movie, only with full control over what’s happening. And even today, years later, the game looks lively and is not at all embarrassing to show it to a modern gamer.

Pros:

  • crazy action that takes your breath away;
  • memorable characters and stylish dialogues;
  • visuals that even after years command respect.

Cons:

  • to be honest, Dante turned out to be too “relaxed” – not everyone will like this image.

Devil May Cry 4 is not just a game, it’s an experience. If you like fast-paced combat, drama, humor, and a fantasy atmosphere with a touch of epicness, you simply can’t pass by. This is a classic that you have to experience for yourself.
