Resident Evil 2
The Resident Evil 2 remake is, first and foremost, an atmospheric horror that will give you goosebumps. The developers have brilliantly rethought the mechanics of the original, adding modern elements and skillfully preserving the feeling of claustrophobia and lack of resources.

In recent years, zombies in games have noticeably devalued themselves — from terrifying creatures, they are increasingly turning into silent targets that evoke neither fear nor respect. Against this background, the Resident Evil 2 remake looks like a real anachronism — and in the best sense of the word. Despite modern graphics and reworked mechanics, it still knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. You only have to hear a distant growl from a dark corridor — and your hand already reaches for the gamepad with anxiety, as if it were 1998 again. The zombies here are frightening not only by their appearance and sounds. They stubbornly continue to walk even after several shots to the head, twitch unpredictably and constantly interfere with accurate aim. And most importantly — they know how to get up. Even if they were just lying around as a lifeless pile of flesh. Therefore, every time you return to familiar levels, your gaze automatically falls on the lying bodies — what if one of them is not completely dead? This tension is an important part of the atmosphere that makes Resident Evil 2 truly creepy.
You can aim while moving, but your accuracy immediately drops. And as always, you have a shortage of ammo. Often you have to survive rather than fight: shoot to get through, rather than clear the room. Sometimes it’s easier to try to slip past, but in tight spaces there’s little chance of that. Zombies constantly try to grab your throat, and you can only fight them off if you have a grenade or knife at hand. The heroes, by the way, don’t run particularly fast, so any wrong step can cost you your health, your supplies, or both. When Mr. X enters the arena, the situation gets even worse. His stomping alone behind the wall already causes panic. Finding yourself in a room with several zombies is stressful. And if a huge, invulnerable enemy is added to them, that’s it — you’re trapped. Escape? It’s not a fact that it will help – you can easily end up right in the arms of the next monster. The game works brilliantly with sound: steps, creaks, roars – everything seems to be heard not in headphones, but behind your back.

Resident Evil 2 is not afraid to throw up challenges when things are already difficult. But that’s its charm: it is honest with the player. Almost always, if something goes wrong, it’s your own fault. You rushed, saved an extra bullet, took the wrong route. Yes, zombies can eat the hero, and in a fit of emotion you want to turn off the game. But after a minute comes the understanding – there was a chance, you just didn’t take it. Survival here is also a strategy. The locations have become larger, many new rooms have appeared in them, and the legendary police station has only strengthened its reputation as the most inconvenient building in history. Not only is the inventory limited – you have to carefully think about what things to take with you and what to leave. Every extra item can result in the absence of a key at the right moment. Routes have to be laid out wisely, and only then do you begin to feel in control of the situation. Over time, shortcuts open up, and tense chaos turns into a manageable system.
Resident Evil 2 proves that even after years, zombies can be scary. If you approach them with respect.
How Resident Evil 2 Remake Differs From the Original: Gameplay, Plot, Atmosphere
Resident Evil 2 Remake is one of those rare cases where a return to the past feels like a step forward. It’s not just an attempt to play on nostalgia: the game not only carefully treats its legacy, but also confidently rethinks it, making the old new.
Puzzles have become more diverse. There is no longer just a hunt for keys, but also mini-problems on logic, which are pleasant to solve. They do not slow down the pace of the game, do not overload the brain, but on the contrary – they are organically woven into the atmosphere and gameplay. Everything is arranged intuitively: the interface helps not to get confused, and the map clearly shows where you have already been, what you have found and what remains to be explored. Even things forgotten due to an overflowing inventory are displayed on the map – very convenient. And although difficult puzzles are a thing of the past, easy and understandable tasks add flavor to the exploration. They do not baffle the player, but make him feel smart. Add to this hints and clearly marked doors with the necessary keys – and we get an almost perfect balance between “searching” and “finding”.
Resident Evil 2 skillfully maintains a balance between horror and action. There is no feeling that the game has turned into a shooter with elements of fear. Fights with zombies and monsters are intense, but restrained – you do not feel like a terminator with a ton of bullets in his pocket. But then you do not have to fiddle with inventory for half an hour. You constantly have to adapt: now you are exploring a building, a minute later – dodging Mr. X, then – deciding which door to open first. The game does not let you get bored. Every moment is filled with atmosphere, and even short episodes can surprise – be it a sudden fright, a rare find or an encounter with a boss, where it is important not just to shoot at the enemy, but to understand which weapon will give the desired effect. This constant transition between the “survival” and “research” modes keeps you in suspense, but does not tire.
Even if you know the original by heart, it’s still interesting to follow what’s happening. The plot has remained largely the same, but the presentation has become much deeper. The dialogues have become more profound, there is more emotion, the characters no longer seem formulaic. Even secondary characters now leave a mark. Some evoke sympathy, you start to empathize with someone, and you want to stay away from someone. This is not just a background for the main story – each image seems to be in its place. And what’s important – you believe in them. Familiar scenes have also been reworked – especially the episodes with Adu and Cheryl. Some moments have been unexpectedly rearranged, some events now develop differently. This is confusing, but makes the game even more interesting. You expect one thing, but get another – and that’s the beauty. This is how the game plays with your memories.
This is where the remake could have been a little bolder – this is the structure of the campaigns. Despite the promises, there are four routes again: Leon and Claire, plus their alternative playthroughs. The main storylines of the heroes are almost identical, only individual scenes, moments with Adu and Cheryl and a couple of puzzles differ. Although the “second playthrough” is presented as a new experience, in fact it offers the same locations, with minor changes. The bosses are almost the same, there are few differences in the routes, and the interaction between the heroes is reduced to a couple of notes and short dialogues. In places, you get the feeling that you are not seeing a single story, but two parallel ones, only slightly intertwined. And if this could be forgiven before, now, in such a detailed remake, such inconsistencies are more noticeable. Nevertheless, all this does not spoil the impression. The campaigns are not drawn out, self-repetitions are not annoying, and interest in the game does not disappear. Especially if you play with the desire to complete everything to the maximum.
Those who want a real challenge should turn on the “Hardcore” mode. Here you will not be able to save at every step – the number of saves is limited, the enemies are stronger, and ammo is worth its weight in gold. You need to carefully think through each step, and every sound around the corner can turn into a deadly danger. A real test of nerves, like in good old horrors. In addition to the main campaign, there are also additional modes where you need to get to the goal in a limited time. This is a great way to test your reaction and skills, especially after completing the main story.
The graphics in the remake are something. Light, shadows, facial expressions of the characters, monsters, bloody walls and burnt bodies – everything looks so well-developed that at times you forget that this is a game and not a horror movie. Everything looks especially beautiful on powerful platforms – PS4 Pro, Xbox One X or PC. On regular consoles, the picture is a little “blurred”, but still holds the bar. And the sound… the sound is just the bomb. Rustles, groans, echoes of footsteps, growls of zombies – everything is done with filigree precision. This is one of the best sound solutions of recent years. Especially with headphones. Sometimes it seems that someone is really walking behind you.
Bottom line: Resident Evil 2 Remake is an example of how to bring iconic games back to life. With respect to the original, but with a modern approach. It scares, pleases, surprises and makes you worry. Even after more than 20 years since the release of the original, it all works, and works clearly. Not ideal, but very close to it.
Why You Should Play Resident Evil 2 Remake
Resident Evil 2 Remake is not just an updated classic, but a truly impressive horror that skillfully builds up the atmosphere and keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first minutes until the final credits. The developers have done a great job: they have reworked the mechanics without losing the spirit of the original, and filled the game with moments that will remain in your memory for a long time. Of course, many things in the remake refer to the original, but this is an independent work that proudly bears its name.
Even if you know the plot inside and out, this does not prevent you from escaping from Mr. X with bated breath or gathering your courage before leaving the safe room. Regardless of whether you are a newcomer or a veteran of the series, this game is simply not to be missed if you love a dark atmosphere and battles that make your palms sweat.
Pros:
- The zombies turned out to be frighteningly realistic
- The atmosphere is like fog: thick and sticky
- The gameplay received smart improvements, including interesting restrictions
- The balance between exploration, combat and puzzles is excellent
- The plot has been improved and has become deeper
- The picture and sound are at the level of film production
Cons:
- The system of several campaigns could have been implemented better – a missed opportunity
