Following its groundbreaking success, many developers eagerly ventured into creating puzzle games that confine players within bizarre and intricate complexes, challenging them to navigate a variety of obstacles. Yet, Valve’s masterpieces offered much more than just clever puzzles; they brimmed with charisma, distinctive style, immersive atmosphere, and a delightful sense of humor. Following in their footsteps, other developers strive to carve out their own unique identities. The indie sensation Antichamber wrapped its innovative puzzles in surrealism and offered insightful musings about the complexities of life and perception. In contrast, Magrunner: Dark Pulse, the latest creation from the Franco-Ukrainian studio Frogwares (famed for their engaging Sherlock Holmes adventures), skillfully merges the vibrant aesthetics of cyberpunk with the eerie, unsettling realms of H.P. Lovecraft.

Yet, this peculiar blend of ideas initially failed to generate much excitement among potential players—the fundraising campaign for Magrunner: Dark Pulse, launched on the European counterpart of Kickstarter, Ulule, did not meet its ambitious targets. Had it not been for Frogwares’ longstanding collaborators at the French publisher Focus Home Interactive, we might never have had the chance to experience this innovative game. From our glove, we unleash positive or negative magnetic charges, almost like firing from a futuristic plasma gun, adding an electrifying twist to gameplay.

The narrative of Magrunner: Dark Pulse unfolds in a quintessential cyberpunk universe, where a formidable megacorporation exerts total control over the populace through a centralized information network known as LifeNet. The ambitious leader of this syndicate appears determined to push boundaries even further, setting his sights on the conquest of outer space. To realize this vision, he assembled a diverse group of scientists from across the globe, and with their collaborative expertise, they developed groundbreaking MagTek technology—leveraging the properties of magnetic fields to unleash the immense energy necessary for exploring distant cosmic realms. Seven meticulously selected specialists, known as “mag runners,” were chosen to be the first to test MagTek. Among these elite individuals is our protagonist, Dax Ward, an orphan with a troubled past. They were all launched into a vast, complex environment filled with numerous challenges and obstacles designed to test their abilities.

While other candidates are fortunate enough to receive backing from various investors, Dax finds himself relying solely on a brilliant mutant scientist and exceptional hacker named Gamaji—who stepped in to raise Vard after the boy tragically lost his parents. At first, the narrative unfolds in a rather predictable manner: we tackle straightforward puzzles and listen to the familiar skeptical remarks from other characters regarding Dax’s future as a magrunner. Despite the doubts surrounding him, Dax refuses to give up and begins to surprise everyone with his unexpected successes. However, soon it’s Dax who experiences a shocking turn of events: the entire complex becomes isolated from the outside world, including the LifeNet system, and unsettling, bizarre occurrences start to unfold within its walls, creating an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty.

Dex and his team find themselves under relentless attack from horrifying creatures, while pristine laboratories and sterile rooms are intermittently replaced by shadowy, claustrophobic catacombs. At times, unsettling signs of destruction, scattered skulls, and eerie messages like “Cthulhu was here” begin to appear ominously on the walls. As you might expect, this so-called “testing” serves entirely different and darker objectives, involving the Beast of the world and its sinister followers…

While this scenario may come off as somewhat forced and absurd, the writers approach their crafted setting with a seriousness that feels almost heavy-handed. Magrunner clearly lacks the whimsical humor and charm found in “Portal,” which would have added a lighter touch. Yet, there’s an undeniable level of intrigue that keeps us engaged and curious about how this chaotic tale will ultimately resolve and what secrets lie ahead. Additionally, the narrative unfolds in an engaging way and doesn’t focus solely on the protagonist. Gamadji frequently shouts nervously, offers valuable advice, and saves us from peril in critical moments, while the once-arrogant LifeNet journalist, who previously mocked Vard’s achievements, is now desperately pleading for his assistance and support.

When it comes to the gameplay mechanics, they occasionally fall short of keeping players fully engaged throughout the experience. The entire concept hinges on a straightforward yet clever rule crafted by the developers: players wield a unique magnetic glove that allows them to polarize nearby objects, assigning them either a positive or negative charge. This fascinating dynamic means that items with matching polarities will attract one another, while those with opposing charges will push each other away. As we navigate through the game, we will utilize this magnetic feature to move platforms and search for special cubes that are absolutely essential for progress. These cubes are not just ordinary objects; they can activate new magnetic fields, shatter seemingly impenetrable doors, and even boost makeshift elevators to unexpected heights. Perhaps even more exciting is their ability to launch players to specific locations. Simply place one of these special cubes on a magnetized platform, jump onto it, and activate the opposite field.

As you get deeper into the gameplay, the challenges become more and more intricate, gradually introducing new elements that make you never let go of the controller. For example, the player must escape from giant cubic structures by deftly manipulating their edges. In other situations, you must find miniature cubes to assemble more massive structures using a mysterious mechanism. Sometimes the game requires you to destroy towers and obstacles by accurately launching explosive cubes at them. All this is part of a bright, rich universe where cubes and ingenuity rule.

About halfway through, we are taught the art of creating magnetic fields at will, guided by none other than a holographic image of Newton – not the scientist who allegedly had an apple fall on his head, but the protagonist’s beloved dog, sweetly nicknamed Dax. This charismatic dog brings a light humorous touch to the atmosphere of the game, making the passage more human and soulful. Yet despite this intriguing development, Magrunner: Dark Pulse doesn’t aim for radical innovation. We still rely on our magnetic ally to retrieve coveted cubes from hard-to-reach places and overcome platforming puzzles in this eccentric, cube-centric world.

The real tension and thrills come when the plot suddenly takes an unexpected turn or the environment changes dramatically, creating a sense of surprise and anxiety. One of the highlights is going through an ominous labyrinth, where strange sculptures depicting fantastic, sometimes frightening creatures rise up gloomy. This is not just a decorative element – it increases the feeling of anxiety and uncertainty.

Such games, of course, are built around a certain gameplay mechanic that sets the rhythm and structure of the passage. However, even one key idea can generate a lot of interesting game situations, as it is effectively implemented, for example, in Portal or Antichamber. The authors of Magrunner: Dark Pulse, apparently, strove to achieve a similar level of conceptual ingenuity, but, alas, the implementation is far from perfect. In addition, the project gives the player almost no freedom in choosing an approach: instead of experimenting with mechanics and discovering non-standard solutions, we are forced to perform monotonous actions, adjusting our steps to a predetermined logical scheme. This deprives the process of creativity and makes it more mechanical than intuitively revealing.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the game is bad. There are genuinely intriguing puzzles sprinkled throughout, and the plot keeps a certain level of suspense and mystery. However, once again, Frogwares has crafted a game that lacks a bit of brilliance, finesse, humor, and overall coherence. In other words, it misses that special charm or magnetism that could draw widespread and entirely positive attention to Magrunner.

  • Pros: The inclusion of Cthulhu is a definite highlight; the overall storyline is solid and engaging; the puzzle mechanics are inventive and original.
  • Cons: Unfortunately, the puzzles tend to be repetitive after a while; the setting can feel somewhat ridiculous and absurd at times.
