The idea of combining the Warhammer Fantasy Battle universe with the large-scale strategy Total War has been in the minds of fans since the first Shogun: Total War appeared in 2000. Many wanted to see how the figures from the tabletop come to life on the screen, turning into epic battles taking into account fatigue, morale and all other little things. And if you add to this a turn-based campaign with the development of provinces and political intrigues – a dream!

And now, after some 16 years, the dream has become a reality – Total War: Warhammer has been released. However, it has not realized everything that could have been. The potential of fantasy Warhammer turned out to be much broader. Therefore, a year later, the second part appeared, which the authors boldly presented as a full-fledged continuation – and, it must be said, for good reason.

All the story campaigns of the basic version of Total War: Warhammer II (and there are, frankly, a whole bunch of DLCs) revolve around one powerful and extremely unstable phenomenon — the magical Vortex. It was created long ago to draw excess magic from the world and thereby weaken the demons. A kind of defense system against Chaos — ancient, but effective.

Centuries passed, millennia… and the spell, alas, began to fail. The funnel became unstable, and this was immediately felt by those who were eager to gain control over the magical flows. First of all, the dark elves and the skaven. They see in the weakened Vortex a chance to subjugate forces that were previously inaccessible. At the same time, the high elves and the mysterious lizardmen strive to maintain balance and prevent the final destruction of the magical protection established by the Old Gods.

So it’s simple: choose the faction whose goals are closer to you, and begin the path to victory – through rituals that will either strengthen the Vortex or make it work for you. In parallel, you will have to negotiate with allies, build alliances and, of course, face enemies. Sometimes – diplomatically, more often – with a sword and magic. By the way, the conflict is far from limited to the four main parties. Each race is divided into several factions, and playing, say, for the high elves, you will receive only one of the noble houses under your command. The rest will have to be persuaded to an alliance or eliminated along the way. And, of course, no one is stopping you from using the army of allies – if you can persuade them to intervene.

Don’t miss this! Grab a free steam account with now!

Otherwise, it’s a classic Total War, only instead of real history – the fantasy lore-rich world of Warhammer. Here, everything: the characters of the factions, strategic preferences, and even the hostility between peoples – are dictated not by history textbooks, but by the mythology of the universe. Well, as usual, there will be surprises. Sometimes the magical winds suddenly change direction, affecting the power of your spells. And sometimes a catastrophe can happen – from a natural disaster to mass riots. So it will definitely not be boring.

Unexpected Events and Choices in the Strategic Campaign

Sometimes you encounter not just coincidences, but real mysteries on your way – for example, the ruins of ancient buildings or the site of a shipwreck. Here it is up to you to decide: is it worth getting involved in this story, or is it better to pass by. And sometimes you are even given a puzzle – you can solve it if you want, or you can ignore it if you want.

A separate line is the so-called dilemmas. Imagine the court of the high elves, full of subtle intrigues and hidden conflicts. Here someone is spreading rumors, there someone was forgotten to be invited to the feast. Your task is to choose whose side to take and how to react. Support can bring:

Total War Warhammer II How to Win

  • increasing authority and influence;
  • gold to the treasury;
  • improving relations with influential families;
  • bonuses to diplomacy or development of provinces.

But be prepared – for each choice you will have to sacrifice something. And this is not only about the elves. The same Skaven or Dark Elves are even more cunning – each commander has his own “loyalty”. If you take a break, then in front of you is not a subordinate, but a rebel with an entire army. But if your actions lead the army to victory, a loyal commander will reward you with trophies – and let you choose what exactly to take.

In addition, the campaign does not develop in a vacuum – the script constantly interferes. Of course, you are free to develop your provinces as you please, explore the world and send troops where you see fit. But story missions bring solid rewards and often motivate you to move in line with the main story. It is revealed through the advisor’s lines, dialogues and even cutscenes. Just do not forget that the enemies do not sit idly by either. They conduct rituals that can affect the Vortex. It is best to disrupt them before it is too late. Even if the enemy is on the other side of a vast map spanning several continents, you always have the option of hiring mercenaries. However, in this case, they will act on their own.

Total War: Warhammer 2 Combat System—From Infantry to Magic and Dragons

The troops in Total War: Warhammer 2, despite the fantasy setting, are not that different in essence from the armies in other games in the series. Everything is familiar here: infantry with swords and spears, cavalry, archers, artillery. Each unit is good in some situations and vulnerable in others.

Tactics decide a lot. For example, a flank attack can scatter even the most resilient units – the same spearmen are good at defense, but do not expect miracles from them if they are outflanked. Height also plays a role: standing on a hill, it is easier to fire at the enemy and impose a fight on your terms.

Total War Warhammer 2 Combat System

The combat effectiveness of fighters decreases from fatigue – after a long march or a protracted battle, they fight worse. And if their “fighting spirit” is also undermined, they can completely panic and rush to flee – right under the enemy’s attacks. Therefore, a commander in an army is not just a formality. Not only does it boost morale, but it can also destroy a squad or two of enemies on its own — the genre’s canons require it. But all of this is just a warm-up for what you might encounter in the fantasy world of Warhammer. Here, giant creatures appear on the battlefield: from terrifying hydras to fire-breathing dragons. One such monster can turn the tide of battle, although it requires a lot of resources to hire and manage. But it will definitely add to the spectacle of the battle.

During a siege, you can use assault towers to quickly occupy the walls, or a battering ram to cut a path through the gates. Want it fast? Then ladders will help you — not as effective, but they don’t require time to build. And, of course, magic. You can’t do without it in the world of Warhammer. True, to cast spells, you need not only mana from the magical winds, but also a special hero — an ordinary soldier is not trained in spells.

Character Development in Total War: Warhammer II – Skills, Equipment and Roles

In Total War: Warhammer II, the developers put a serious emphasis on character development — much more than in other games in the series. Each hero here is not just a unit, but a full-fledged character with a skill tree, equipment, and even a whole story.

Character Development in Total War Warhammer II

Each has slots for items: weapons, armor, various talismans and accessories — like banners or loyal companions: advisers, minstrels, alchemists, and other company that strengthens the hero in different ways. And there are a ton of bonuses. Here are just a few of them:

  • increased damage and defense in battle;
  • increased discipline among soldiers;
  • increased public order in the province;
  • increased tax income;
  • accelerated construction of buildings;
  • bonuses to diplomacy and intelligence.

All characters are divided into lords and heroes. Lords are the commanders of armies. They not only lead your troops into battle, but also influence the cities where they are: they can increase trade, order, tax collection. Moreover, lords are pumped up not only for battles. For example, if he has been ruling a restless province for a long time, he will receive a bonus to public order. And if he stood as a garrison during construction, he will reduce the cost of new buildings. Heroes are a kind of “agents”, like in other Total Wars, but much more flexible. Unlike “Shogun”, where each type of hero had a strict purpose (monk – turmoil, ninja – sabotage, metsuke – counter-espionage), here the same hero can arrange sabotage, undermine the enemy economy, and even send an enemy lord to the next world.

In addition, heroes can enter battles with the army. This is especially important for magicians. Their spells are not just spectacular effects, but a real way to change the outcome of the battle. They can cause a firestorm, heal a squad or curse the enemy. And this can really decide the outcome of the entire battle. But do not forget: no matter how strong your character is, he is still mortal. One careless maneuver – and you lose not just a fighter, but a pumped-up commander. Therefore, it is better to keep mages behind, and surround lords with infantry. Although, of course, everyone chooses their own tactics.

How the Global Map Works in Total War: Warhammer 2

The turn-based global map in Total War: Warhammer 2 is built on the classic genre familiar to fans of the series: here you manage an empire, develop cities, manage armies and diplomacy. Each settlement is not just a point on the map, but an important element of your economy and military machine. In cities, buildings are constructed that affect everything: from recruiting troops to trade, resource extraction and even magical rituals.

Several settlements are united into provinces, and here there is scope for strategic thinking. At the provincial level, you can issue decrees – they allow, for example, to increase tax collection, improve order or accelerate population growth. Everything depends on your current situation: somewhere money is more important, somewhere – peace, and somewhere – the speed of development. But the game is not limited to standard economic chains. Unique resources scattered across the map require a special approach. Simply extracting them is not enough. In order for them to start bringing in profit, you need to establish trade with other factions. Without a trade agreement, you just have a nice resource icon in the interface. Although, of course, some resources give bonuses even without selling – for example, they increase morale, reduce the cost of hiring, or help keep the population in check.

How the Global Map Works in Total War Warhammer 2

Factions in Warhammer 2 are not just repainted units. Each race here is unique to the core. Some have their own combat mechanics, some have their own economic features. And some have a real plague on wheels in the form of filth. Let’s take the same vampires. Their influence spreads even outside of combat: if you just stand with an army on their territory, you will start losing people. But they themselves receive buffs in their “native” lands. Skaven are a whole other story. Their filth hits public order and the economy, and not only of their enemies, but also of themselves. This creates constant pressure: either expand and conquer new territories, or your own lands will sink into chaos. This approach makes the game for each faction unique: you need to adapt to its mechanics, and not push the same strategy for everyone.

Movement on the map is free and intuitive. There are no hexes or cells – you just indicate a point, and the army goes there. There are campaign modes: march, ambush, raid, and each gives its own bonuses. Ambush, for example, allows you to stealthily sneak up on the enemy. And switching to the sea route turns the army into a fleet, which opens up new routes. Pumped-up commanders have additional capabilities – for example, increased range of movement or bonuses during assaults. Training here is not just a menu with tips – it is built into the game itself. Through story campaigns, you gradually get used to the mechanics. Yes, there is one advisor for everyone, and he may seem a little strange when he is equally enthusiastic about instructing both elves and skaven. But his advice is given through quests and woven into the events of the campaign. Everything feels natural: “Look for ancient ruins, there may be a warpstone there”, “Increase your army to scare your neighbors” – these are not just instructions, but motivation for action.

Unexpected Events and Choices in the Strategic Campaign

The tutorial is supplemented by pop-up tips and a built-in guide. Although, frankly speaking, not everything in the game is explained directly. Some things have to be looked up on your own. For example, how to accurately calculate the distance for a hike. Only after reading the forum did I understand that you need to hold down the right mouse button and move the cursor – then the route will appear and a clear understanding of how many moves the journey will take. But this is the beauty of Warhammer 2 – the deeper you dig, the more interesting mechanics you find. Diplomacy is also well developed here: you can not only make peace or declare war, but also create alliances, agree on joint actions, trade and influence others through intrigue. This is especially cool among the high elves – they literally build a political web between the factions.

Each race has unique capabilities. The dark elves have a slave economy. The lizardmen have bonuses from the geomantic network connecting their cities. The Skaven can build secret cities right under other settlements – an excellent opportunity for covert expansion. And this is just the tip of the iceberg – each side in the game feels different, which encourages you to replay for other factions. The climate is another important detail. If in the first part of the game some cities were simply impossible to capture for certain races, now everything is available. But the effectiveness of management directly depends on weather conditions. In an unfavorable climate, the economy will falter and public order will suffer. Sometimes it is easier to burn a city to the ground than to try to hold it in a cold desert or humid jungle.

Is Total War: Warhammer 2 Worth Playing in 2025?

I remember the first time I saw Total War: Warhammer 2 at an exhibition. At the time, I was perplexed: why show such a large-scale game in a 20-minute demo? Now, having spent dozens of hours in it, I understand it even less. How can you seriously present such a project without showing even a tenth of its depth?

Total War Warhammer II review

The game really lives up to its loud name. This is a real total war: on the global map, you develop your possessions, establish diplomacy and build an empire, and in battles you use tactics, magic, monsters, and even technology – if you have the first part of Warhammer, you can play as dwarves with their war machines. Yes, not without rough edges, but overall – this is a powerful implementation of the idea, 90 percent out of 100.

This summer, developers from the former USSR are particularly abundant in robot-themed games, showcasing their creativity and innovation in this genre. In August, the first episode of the ambitious post-apocalyptic adventure The Uncertain will launch from the Moscow studio ComonGames. In this intriguing game, players will take on the role of an overly curious robot, who is deeply fascinated by the history of the long-vanished human race. The project clearly draws inspiration from the interactive dramas of Telltale Games, promising rich storytelling and emotional depth.

Recently, we also discovered the platformer Scrap Garden from Lithuania’s Flazm Interactive Entertainment. In this engaging game, the protagonist doesn’t face complex moral dilemmas; instead, he simply has to focus on saving the world from impending disaster. This shift in narrative style highlights the diversity and creativity present in this summer’s gaming offerings.

The premise of Scrap Garden shares some similarities with Machinarium: a small robot named Kenny, who was destined for the scrap heap, unexpectedly embarks on an important mission to rescue an entire city after a sudden blackout leaves all its mechanical inhabitants frozen in time, unable to move or function. However, players shouldn’t anticipate many dramatic plot twists or extensive interactions with a diverse cast of charming characters. Instead, our protagonist predictably engages in tasks to repair and activate crucial energy crystal towers scattered throughout the city. Meanwhile, the other residents have been transformed into mere metallic figures, unable to assist or provide guidance.

Scrap Garden items

A somewhat surprising plot twist does emerge only in the final moments of the game, injecting a bit of intrigue into the story. Throughout most of the journey, our primary conversations are with the mayor of the city, who provides instructions on where to venture next and what actions to take. While the adventure has its moments, it lacks the depth and variety of character interactions that might elevate the experience further.

Yet, the narrative is engaging—much like Machinarium, you quickly develop a sense of compassion and warmth for the protagonist. He is small, adorable, and yearns to soar through the skies. The unseen narrator adds depth to the atmosphere with poignant observations, such as vividly illustrating how the wind brushes against Kenny’s face during his inaugural flight. Moreover, the creators have imagined a delightful and quirky realm where robots indulge in ice cream, conduct peculiar experiments, aspire for power, and bravely confront enormous frogs and octopuses.

Scrap Garden robot communication

The robot city is intricately designed, showcasing a rich tapestry of details that invite exploration.

Robot vs Dragon

The gameplay experience in Scrap Garden can be described similarly. On one hand, it remains straightforward and predictable, capturing the essence of classic platformers. The developers aren’t hesitant to utilize well-known tropes and clichés of the genre: we jump, solve puzzles, dodge traps, and engage in battles against spiders, rats, and formidable bosses. Throughout our adventure, we’ll be hauling boxes, activating platforms, triggering runes, and skillfully redirecting beams with mirrors. Collecting crystals is essential for unlocking specific areas, and we even snatch key storyline gears from particularly large foes, adding a sense of accomplishment to our journey.

Scrap Garden robot in a dark room

Our little robot lacks any unique skills or upgradeable attributes, which keeps the focus on the core gameplay mechanics. The boss encounters unfold in familiar ways—dodging attacks and hurling rocks, or taking cover and tossing rocks once more. Naturally, the climax features some quick-time events, injecting a bit of excitement and urgency into the final moments of the game.

On the other hand, taking part in this adventure brings real pleasure. The controls are surprisingly too clear, even when using the keyboard – which is rare for platformers. Puzzle tasks are organically woven into the overall gameplay, offering a balanced difficulty, and along the way the player can collect most of the sparkling crystals. The main character evokes sincere sympathy – his charisma fills the entire journey with special warmth and makes it truly exciting. The game world pleases the eye with its original visual style, and the atmosphere as a whole is mesmerizing and alluring with its magic. The gameplay keeps you in difficulty, giving the desire to explore each level to the end and reveal all the secrets of Scrap Garden.

Scrap Garden robot on the railway

Additionally, it is worth noting the presence of a number of truly original game episodes and mechanics that do not let you get bored. For example, at certain moments, the robot hero is engaged in resource extraction, rushing along winding rails in a minecart or deftly maneuvering during a rapid descent from the mountain, avoiding the boulders falling behind him. The game amazes with the variety of locations: there are loud city landscapes, blooming meadows, mysterious swamps, snow-capped mountain peaks, and even a secret underground laboratory full of unexpected discoveries. And the final touch is large-scale battles with “bosses”, including a mighty dragon, which adds epicness to this adventure.

Scrap Garden Verdict

Scrap Garden is a discreet but charming platformer that doesn’t try to surprise players with revolutionary mechanics or an abundance of gameplay solutions. Its strength lies in the heartfelt story, cozy atmosphere and touching image of the main character.

The game masterfully combines elements of exploration and platform gameplay, organically involving the player in its bizarre, slightly fairy-tale setting.

Pros:

  • An interesting story filled with warmth;
  • A handsome protagonist who evokes sympathy from the first minutes;
  • Clear and responsive controls;
  • Epic boss battles that will be remembered for a long time;
  • Restrained but effective classic gameplay;
  • A calming musical background and cozy atmosphere that enhance the overall impression of the game.

Cons:

  • The lack of a progressive system of unique skills limits the power of character development;
  • Some aspects of the game may feel monotonous, which can reduce interest over a long session.

The specifications required for a PC to run Scrap Garden are clearly detailed in the system requirements provided. These guidelines ensure that the game operates smoothly and seamlessly, allowing players to enjoy a satisfying frame rate and experience quick loading times. The post Magrunner: Dark Pulse first appeared on VPEsports.

It’s well-known that the Portal series pioneered a new path in the gaming world, revolutionizing how players engage with puzzles. Following its groundbreaking success, many developers eagerly ventured into creating puzzle games that confine players within bizarre and intricate complexes, challenging them to navigate a variety of obstacles. Yet, Valve’s masterpieces offered much more than just clever puzzles; they brimmed with charisma, distinctive style, immersive atmosphere, and a delightful sense of humor. Following in their footsteps, other developers strive to carve out their own unique identities. The indie sensation Antichamber wrapped its innovative puzzles in surrealism and offered insightful musings about the complexities of life and perception. In contrast, Magrunner: Dark Pulse, the latest creation from the Franco-Ukrainian studio Frogwares (famed for their engaging Sherlock Holmes adventures), skillfully merges the vibrant aesthetics of cyberpunk with the eerie, unsettling realms of H.P. Lovecraft.

Yet, this peculiar blend of ideas initially failed to generate much excitement among potential players—the fundraising campaign for Magrunner: Dark Pulse, launched on the European counterpart of Kickstarter, Ulule, did not meet its ambitious targets. Had it not been for Frogwares’ longstanding collaborators at the French publisher Focus Home Interactive, we might never have had the chance to experience this innovative game. From our glove, we unleash positive or negative magnetic charges, almost like firing from a futuristic plasma gun, adding an electrifying twist to gameplay.

Magrunner Dark Pulse Free Steam Account

The narrative of Magrunner: Dark Pulse unfolds in a quintessential cyberpunk universe, where a formidable megacorporation exerts total control over the populace through a centralized information network known as LifeNet. The ambitious leader of this syndicate appears determined to push boundaries even further, setting his sights on the conquest of outer space. To realize this vision, he assembled a diverse group of scientists from across the globe, and with their collaborative expertise, they developed groundbreaking MagTek technology—leveraging the properties of magnetic fields to unleash the immense energy necessary for exploring distant cosmic realms. Seven meticulously selected specialists, known as “mag runners,” were chosen to be the first to test MagTek. Among these elite individuals is our protagonist, Dax Ward, an orphan with a troubled past. They were all launched into a vast, complex environment filled with numerous challenges and obstacles designed to test their abilities.

Magrunner Dark Pulse weapon

While other candidates are fortunate enough to receive backing from various investors, Dax finds himself relying solely on a brilliant mutant scientist and exceptional hacker named Gamaji—who stepped in to raise Vard after the boy tragically lost his parents. At first, the narrative unfolds in a rather predictable manner: we tackle straightforward puzzles and listen to the familiar skeptical remarks from other characters regarding Dax’s future as a magrunner. Despite the doubts surrounding him, Dax refuses to give up and begins to surprise everyone with his unexpected successes. However, soon it’s Dax who experiences a shocking turn of events: the entire complex becomes isolated from the outside world, including the LifeNet system, and unsettling, bizarre occurrences start to unfold within its walls, creating an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty.

Dex and his team find themselves under relentless attack from horrifying creatures, while pristine laboratories and sterile rooms are intermittently replaced by shadowy, claustrophobic catacombs. At times, unsettling signs of destruction, scattered skulls, and eerie messages like “Cthulhu was here” begin to appear ominously on the walls. As you might expect, this so-called “testing” serves entirely different and darker objectives, involving the Beast of the world and its sinister followers…

Magrunner Dark Pulse Neon Buildings

While this scenario may come off as somewhat forced and absurd, the writers approach their crafted setting with a seriousness that feels almost heavy-handed. Magrunner clearly lacks the whimsical humor and charm found in “Portal,” which would have added a lighter touch. Yet, there’s an undeniable level of intrigue that keeps us engaged and curious about how this chaotic tale will ultimately resolve and what secrets lie ahead. Additionally, the narrative unfolds in an engaging way and doesn’t focus solely on the protagonist. Gamadji frequently shouts nervously, offers valuable advice, and saves us from peril in critical moments, while the once-arrogant LifeNet journalist, who previously mocked Vard’s achievements, is now desperately pleading for his assistance and support.

Repetition cubed

When it comes to the gameplay mechanics, they occasionally fall short of keeping players fully engaged throughout the experience. The entire concept hinges on a straightforward yet clever rule crafted by the developers: players wield a unique magnetic glove that allows them to polarize nearby objects, assigning them either a positive or negative charge. This fascinating dynamic means that items with matching polarities will attract one another, while those with opposing charges will push each other away. As we navigate through the game, we will utilize this magnetic feature to move platforms and search for special cubes that are absolutely essential for progress. These cubes are not just ordinary objects; they can activate new magnetic fields, shatter seemingly impenetrable doors, and even boost makeshift elevators to unexpected heights. Perhaps even more exciting is their ability to launch players to specific locations. Simply place one of these special cubes on a magnetized platform, jump onto it, and activate the opposite field.

As you get deeper into the gameplay, the challenges become more and more intricate, gradually introducing new elements that make you never let go of the controller. For example, the player must escape from giant cubic structures by deftly manipulating their edges. In other situations, you must find miniature cubes to assemble more massive structures using a mysterious mechanism. Sometimes the game requires you to destroy towers and obstacles by accurately launching explosive cubes at them. All this is part of a bright, rich universe where cubes and ingenuity rule.

Magrunner Dark Pulse player and professor

About halfway through, we are taught the art of creating magnetic fields at will, guided by none other than a holographic image of Newton – not the scientist who allegedly had an apple fall on his head, but the protagonist’s beloved dog, sweetly nicknamed Dax. This charismatic dog brings a light humorous touch to the atmosphere of the game, making the passage more human and soulful. Yet despite this intriguing development, Magrunner: Dark Pulse doesn’t aim for radical innovation. We still rely on our magnetic ally to retrieve coveted cubes from hard-to-reach places and overcome platforming puzzles in this eccentric, cube-centric world.

The real tension and thrills come when the plot suddenly takes an unexpected turn or the environment changes dramatically, creating a sense of surprise and anxiety. One of the highlights is going through an ominous labyrinth, where strange sculptures depicting fantastic, sometimes frightening creatures rise up gloomy. This is not just a decorative element – it increases the feeling of anxiety and uncertainty.

Magrunner Dark Pulse Color Cube

Such games, of course, are built around a certain gameplay mechanic that sets the rhythm and structure of the passage. However, even one key idea can generate a lot of interesting game situations, as it is effectively implemented, for example, in Portal or Antichamber. The authors of Magrunner: Dark Pulse, apparently, strove to achieve a similar level of conceptual ingenuity, but, alas, the implementation is far from perfect. In addition, the project gives the player almost no freedom in choosing an approach: instead of experimenting with mechanics and discovering non-standard solutions, we are forced to perform monotonous actions, adjusting our steps to a predetermined logical scheme. This deprives the process of creativity and makes it more mechanical than intuitively revealing.

Magrunner: Dark Pulse verdict

This doesn’t necessarily mean the game is bad. There are genuinely intriguing puzzles sprinkled throughout, and the plot keeps a certain level of suspense and mystery. However, once again, Frogwares has crafted a game that lacks a bit of brilliance, finesse, humor, and overall coherence. In other words, it misses that special charm or magnetism that could draw widespread and entirely positive attention to Magrunner.

  • Pros: The inclusion of Cthulhu is a definite highlight; the overall storyline is solid and engaging; the puzzle mechanics are inventive and original.
  • Cons: Unfortunately, the puzzles tend to be repetitive after a while; the setting can feel somewhat ridiculous and absurd at times.

  • And yes, the legendary Horse Armor add-on is also here! And in two versions at once: now you can decorate your steed to your taste, choosing the armor you like. This is a fun and nostalgic bonus that fans of the original will appreciate.

If you have long been waiting for a reason to return to Cyrodiil – here it is. And if you are a newbie – you simply cannot think of a better option for your first acquaintance with this universe.

Is Oblivion Remastered Deluxe Edition Worth Buying in 2025?

Should you buy the Oblivion Remastered Deluxe Edition? The answer to this question depends entirely on how much you loved the original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and how much you want to dive into the reimagined classic.

The standard edition already includes everything you need for a complete immersion: the main storylines, the legendary DLCs, and all the additional content released after the original’s release. In other words, you don’t have to upgrade to the Deluxe Edition to enjoy the game itself and its iconic moments.

Is Oblivion Remastered Deluxe Edition Worth Buying in 2025

However, the Deluxe version definitely offers something more, especially for those who see Oblivion not just as a game, but as a part of their gaming youth. Together with the remaster, which officially released on April 22, 2025 on all platforms (without any exclusive “early access windows”), Deluxe buyers get a number of bonuses that can really enrich the experience.

First of all, this is a digital art book that allows you to look behind the scenes of the remaster’s creation: sketches, concepts, developer comments – all this gives a deeper understanding of how the classic was rethought to suit modern standards. The picture is completed by the official soundtrack, reworked while preserving the atmospheric sound of the original – the perfect accompaniment for nostalgic evenings or inspiring gaming sessions.

A special mention should be made of the remastered version of that very Horse Armor DLC – a controversial, meme-like, but already a cultural phenomenon addition. Now it looks much more organic and even evokes a slight smile in those who remember how scandalous its appearance was in 2006. This is a real greeting from the past, wrapped in modern graphics.

The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered System Requirements

In general, if you just want to go through Oblivion again in its updated form, the standard version is quite enough. But if you’re one of those people for whom Tamriel is more than just a game map, and every little detail evokes memories and emotions, the Deluxe Edition may be just what makes returning to the world of Oblivion truly special.

The post Total War: WARHAMMER + DLC first appeared on VPEsports.

You know, in the tabletop Warhammer Fantasy, the main thing is not even the battles, but the process itself. It’s all about love for detail and unhurried creativity. Buy a box of miniatures of Bretonnian knights, carefully assemble, prime, start painting, trying not to deviate from the lore and not to screw up anything. And to hell with these battles! Let the fighters stand proudly on the shelf and look askance at guests who whisper behind their backs: “Wow, he’s twenty-seven, and he plays soldiers.”

Previously, when hearing “Warhammer” and “Total War” in the same sentence, everyone thought about mods. Almost every part of the series received modifications in the spirit of fantasy: the Imperials kneaded the Skaven, the Orcs fought the Elves – repainting and nothing more. That’s why they were afraid that Total War: Warhammer would turn out to be just Rome 2 in a mask, with magic instead of catapults.

But the fears turned out to be in vain. Yes, it’s still recognizable Total War — the developers didn’t break the series’ foundations and didn’t repeat the mistakes of Rome 2. No revolution. But that’s what makes it all work. Instead of chaos — smart, targeted changes. Each one in its place.

Will a seasoned commander who chased heretics across Europe and conquered the treasures of the East figure out what’s going on? He will understand from the very first minutes. Before him is a new but promising Empire. Cities are springing up like mushrooms after rain: mines are being built, taverns are opening, fields are being sown, and military infrastructure is appearing. Generals are not just showing off in gold – they are useful, capturing lands and repelling invasions. It seems like a classic of the genre. But the game makes it clear from the very first steps: everything is not quite as it used to be.

It all starts with choosing a faction. And here is the first surprise: instead of dozens of nations, there are only four main groups. People of the Empire, seasoned dwarves, green-skinned barbarians, and gloomy vampires. Each has one state, and even with a limited choice of leaders. It seems modest? But this is a deceptive impression. Because the differences between these factions are not just visual or nominal — they are profound. Playing as dwarves or vampires is like playing different games with different logic and rhythm.

Total War WARHAMMER Free Steam Account

The Empire, for example, serves as a kind of standard. This is a faction with a classic management system, developed politics, economy and army. Everything is familiar, everything is clear — if you played the previous Total Wars, you will quickly get the hang of it. But even here there are some peculiarities. In particular, the issuance of titles: a witch hunter with the position of “privy councilor” becomes much more effective, and his actions are cheaper. Think about it: you do not just move the hero around the map — you think through the career path of each valuable character. This adds depth and makes even non-combat characters useful 100%.

Vampires act completely differently. They do not have money as such. Their economy is built on magic — black, dark, stillborn. And this is not just an entourage — it is a currency. Magic is building materials, salaries, and taxes. And also the ability to raise the dead right from the battlefield. Yes, their army is weak in characteristics, but it is restored literally “on the spot”. No need to return to cities, build barracks and wait for reinforcements. The vampire just snaps his fingers – and a fresh portion of skeletons and zombies joins him. Greenskins are a whole other story. They cannot be kept alone. They get bored – and they start cutting each other. Militancy falls, the crowd goes wild. But as soon as the war begins, everything changes: victories, robberies, raids – and a new army is born, led by the cry of WAAAGH! It is important here not just to fight, but to fight actively and effectively. You can’t lose: defeats break the spirit of the horde. And no trade, no civilization – these are orcs, a fight is important to them, not trade agreements. Such game mechanics force you to keep up the pace and not slow down.

Dwarves are the embodiment of perseverance and memory. They have a Book of Grievances. Every crime against the people is recorded there: a destroyed city, a murdered merchant, a bad performance with the participation of the undead – everything will go into the archive. And until the grievances are avenged, discontent grows in the country. The people grumble, discontent grows, and if you ignore the Book for too long, this will lead to real problems: riots, a decline in public order, sabotage. And all this forces the player to deploy separate armies to organize punitive expeditions. Such “revenge mechanics” make the dwarves the most integral and logical faction.

Why Total War Warhammer Removed Politics and Internal Conflicts

The technologies in the game are also tasteful. Yes, the wording is often familiar: “+5 to attack”, “+10 to morale”, “+20 to mine income”. But the process of their discovery, the path to the result is different for each faction. For some – through magic, for others – through engineering, for others – through military exploits. This adds gameplay depth and emphasizes the uniqueness of each nation. Not everything is perfect. Unified buildings that differ only in icon and name are more of a compromise than an advantage. Orcs suddenly able to conduct diplomacy – strange, although not critical. But all this is drowned in the general feeling of novelty. Total War: Warhammer really feels new. Each faction affects the very foundation of the gameplay: management, logistics, army, economy – everything is tied to unique mechanics.

Top-rated titles are free with our free steam accounts with games!

Even prisoners are treated differently here. The Imperials behave in the spirit of the old school – diplomatically. Dwarves are tough and straightforward: kill or let go. Vampires? Their methods of “persuasion” turn enemies into new fighters for the army of the dead. And orcs can even roast a prisoner – just for fun. It’s details like these that turn the game from just a new Total War into a truly reimagined experience. This is not just a change of skin on the global map. This is a deep reconstruction of the very essence of the game.

Total War: Warhammer Gameplay Features

On the battlefield, the difference between the factions is immediately noticeable. The Imperials are a classic: orderly ranks, cavalry, infantry – everything according to the regulations. But the dwarves, for example, act completely differently. They have neither cavalry nor spearmen, and they run as if every step is taken through force. This makes them vulnerable in a head-on skirmish with enemy horsemen. But do not rush to write off the bearded men – they have such things in their arsenal that the enemy has never dreamed of: heavy guns, bombers, and – hold on tight! – flamethrowers. All these technical wonders force you to play for them differently: fortify yourself, stand still and take as much equipment as possible into battle. There are factions that cannot be helped at all. For example, some units simply fall apart from ordinary human infantry, not holding out for a couple of rounds. And it was not possible to overwhelm them with numbers.

Vampires aren’t afraid to lose: the dead don’t complain. Skeletons and zombies go into battle, crumble like dust, but against their backdrop, real horrors come out into battle – ghostly wolves, flocks of bats, monstrous ghoul-musclemen… Of all the monsters, these are definitely the ones who got lucky. Although the orcs and goblins also have a rich fauna – but without much creativity. But the goblins don’t demand anything: hire a pack for fifty kopecks – and they’re already running squealing at the enemy. True, a minute later they can just as quickly run back.

Total War WARHAMMER System Requirements

But the battles in Total War: Warhammer really come alive thanks to the mages and shamans. There were once fears that magic would simply displace artillery – and in some places that’s what happened. If you want, you can pound the enemy with fireballs, if you want, you can turn your mage into a walking buff that fills the soldiers with courage and armor. Or you can even curse the enemy army so that their armor rots right before your eyes.

The stronger the Wind of Magic blows in the region, the more active the spells are — and the battlefield becomes an arena of fantasy chaos. At the same time, the game has remained itself — it is still Total War, and not some Stronghold Legends or Rise of Nations. Success still depends on how you command: squeeze the enemy in pincers, give the order to the archers in time, aim correctly — then victory is near. But if you throw magic blindly and throw units anywhere — even the coolest spells will not save you.

Commanders now play an important role. They are not just commanders with guards, but real titans. Lords, as they are called in the game, gain levels, learn skills and turn into combat machines. Moreover, the skills are now branched, and each player can choose in which direction to develop their hero:

  • Combat branch — increases the personal power of the lord in battles, makes him tenacious and deadly.
  • Global branch — increases the efficiency of province management, income and diplomatic influence.
  • Army branch — increases the combat characteristics of the entire army, improves morale, movement speed and other parameters.

Assistants have also appeared — as many as six of them, each with its own trick, like equipment in a good RPG.

Total War Warhammer Gameplay Features

And this is one of the main reasons to love Total War: Warhammer again. The commander is no longer just a pawn on the chessboard — he is a full-fledged hero, whom you want to pump up, hang artifacts on and lead into battle yourself. If before you were attached to the character in Skyrim or Dragon Age, now — to your lord. And a properly trained, equipped and battle-hardened lord is, if not half of the victory, then definitely its key element. Previously, commanders did not have such influence even in Rome 2 or Attila. And now — this is the basis of the gameplay, which cannot be brushed aside.

Why Total War: Warhammer Removed Politics and Internal Conflicts

From the very beginning, the developers made it clear: complex political intrigue is not about Warhammer. Their focus is on individuals, heroes fighting chaos, not bureaucrats. The logic is generally clear. For the Warhammer Fantasy universe, this really works. But for Total War, it’s a step back. Players have already been accustomed to internal conflicts, cunning hierarchy, betrayals and civil wars right in the midst of power. And then all this was simply cut out. Only the Empire of Sigmar can still hand out titles, but even there there is no room for heirs or a “personnel reserve” – only generals, lords and heroes. That’s it.

  • Lords, by the way, are immortal – and this justifies any investment in them.

What instead of internal politics? In the later stages of the game, you will find… “education” of heroes. That is, a series of personal tasks that replace the main plot. In fact, these are special battles with pre-set enemies and conditions. And you won’t be able to complete them with auto-battle – you’ll have to really think. As a reward, you’ll get armor, artifacts, magic things – and yes, it’s worth fighting for. Does this compensate for the cut politics? In some places – yes. But it’s still strange to watch how strategic mechanics are being cleaned out of a global strategy.

Total War WARHAMMER on Steam

And the losses didn’t end there. The taxes, diseases, and unsanitary conditions that impressed us so much in Total War: Attila have disappeared. Corruption and religions have also disappeared. Instead of all this – the corruption of Chaos and vampires. Even food is now just a plus figure: there are farms, there is growth, but there is no hunger. In principle. Okay, the lack of corruption can still be justified – Warhammer does not strive to copy the real economy. But why did hunger disappear? In a gloomy world full of death, disease and cults, shouldn’t there be epidemics and a lack of resources? This isn’t a rainbow fantasy like Might and Magic.

Yes, Total War: Warhammer is still a lively game. But it has taken away important dilemmas – where to build mines so as not to drown the city in mud, or what land to give to arable farming so that neighboring regions don’t die out. Apparently, in this world, the survivors ask themselves completely different questions.

Is the linearity of the Total War: Warhammer campaign a plus or a minus for the player?

The campaign has become much more straightforward: instead of the usual branching paths for the Total War series, the player now has a brightly lit, neon path. Proud bearded dwarves immediately head to the southern wastelands to crush orcs. Vampires first need to restore order at home – and, as a rule, with their fists. The same must be done by orcs and goblins scattered across clans. And the Empire, led by Karl Franz, initially represents a set of disparate principalities that need to be reunited into a great power. But at its core, everything is the same: we start with one town and not the most formidable army. So that you don’t get lost at the very beginning, the game even tells you who to hit first – it highlights the enemy right on the map. Then delicate game design comes into play, which gently but persistently leads the player along the desired route. One of the tools is a system of restrictions on the capture of settlements. People cannot settle where vampires rule, and vice versa. But the green skins feel quite comfortable both in their lairs and in underground dwarven fortresses. True, they, like the dwarves, have a persistent allergy to human cities: you can capture and plunder them, but you can’t live there – no way.

total war warhammer 1 gameplay

  • The dwarves, of course, will not miss the chance to grind a human settlement to pieces, but they will not be able to settle in it – not the same climate, not the same walls.
  • The Empire of Sigmar is similar in structure to the Holy Roman Empire, but here it is divided into a set of independent, unrelated principalities.

But it has become easier with armies: their number is now again limited only by your wallet. And to prevent the AI from running around the entire map with tiny remnants of units, the developers strengthened the garrisons. Up to fifteen units can now be stationed in the provincial capital from the very beginning – impressive, right? This reduces the need to keep a bunch of small armies for defense. Plus, each faction has either a convenient mountain range to cover the rear, or a safe position at the edge of the map – like the dwarves. As a result, the campaign feels more focused. Or, to be honest, more linear. The first step is already suggested to you, then forward, beat this enemy and gain a foothold in this gorge. Beginners will benefit from this approach: there is less chance of getting lost in the strategic wilds. But veterans accustomed to freedom of choice may find this focus limiting.

Pros and Cons of Total War: WARHAMMER

Total War decided not to stand still – and rightly so. Instead of delving into familiar worlds again, the developers took a risk and stepped in a new direction. The move into fantasy opened up a lot of possibilities, although in some places it is a pity that the mechanics that used to work well were lost.

Is the linearity of the Total War

Pros

  • The change of scenery has clearly benefited the series.
  • There are not many factions, but each has a distinct style and mechanics, now they are truly different.
  • The leveling of commanders has become more like a full-fledged RPG system.
  • Magic in battle is not only spectacular, but also tactically useful.

Cons

  • A lot of what worked well in Rome 2 was cut out – it did not fit into the new concept.
  • The campaign now feels more straightforward, there is less freedom to maneuver.
  • The developers did not dare to make bold innovations – the game is more of an evolution than a revolution.

While browsing through a familiar giveaway, I came across a charming little pixel game that I would typically pass by without giving it a second thought. Generally, I’m not one to enjoy indie titles; I lean more towards massive AAA projects that offer intricate worlds and elaborate gameplay. However, during my visit to my parents’ home, armed only with my trusty laptop, I decided to explore this game, and I was genuinely delighted by the captivating experience I encountered.

Titan Souls Free Steam Account

You take control of a tiny character (unclear if it’s a man or woman) equipped with just a bow and a solitary arrow. The game’s controls are refreshingly simple: one stick for maneuvering and directing your character’s attacks, a roll button that also acts as a run button when pressed, and an attack button that can be held down to extend the arrow’s range while also allowing you to retrieve it afterward.

At first glance, the combat system appears straightforward—you dodge incoming enemy strikes and respond with your own shots—but it’s much more intricate than it seems. The game features only boss foes, each of which can be defeated with a single shot (and you can be taken out just as quickly, one hit is all it takes). However, don’t be misled into thinking it’s an easy task; you must accurately hit their weak spot, which you either need to locate, expose, or strike—tasks that can be quite challenging. Additionally, during certain moments in the game, you have the opportunity to apply unique effects to your arrow, adding an extra layer of strategy and excitement to your encounters.

Titan Souls Gameplay

To defeat one of the initial bosses, you’ll have to resort to a rather ingenious tactic: melting it. To do this, you need to light a flame source and shoot an arrow through the fire to hit the enemy. This approach is just one of many clever ways the game encourages exploration of mechanics. There are a total of nineteen enemies in the game world, each of which is placed in its own unique corner of the huge map. Although all bosses can be defeated by attacking weak points, the variety of their forms, behavior patterns, and encounter situations ensures that each battle is a fresh experience. As for the game universe itself, it, alas, gives the impression of a desolate and sparsely populated space. Despite the presence of various biomes and wide open areas – including a vast labyrinth – the game rarely offers the player anything truly exciting. The graphical execution, built on pixelated aesthetics, does not show any particular shine and is hardly capable of causing visual delight. If I were the developers, I would consider adding traps, original puzzles, and arrow-based quests to make the boss hunts more intense and worthwhile. The path to the bosses could also be more meaningful – a simple but clever connection of key locations would have already significantly enlivened the exploration structure. Instead, the player is forced to wander through empty, unremarkable caves, moving from one biome to another without a sense of direction or exciting adventure.

Titan Souls Winter

Scattered throughout the vast expanses of the game world, checkpoints become your strongholds – think of them as campfires, beacons, or other safety symbols, depending on your imagination. These small glowing circles on the ground indicate the number of bosses lurking nearby and roughly indicate the direction in which to go looking. When killed, the hero returns to the last activated checkpoint, but be sure to reactivate the previous one upon returning to maintain order and stability of progress. Finding these vital landmarks is easy – the developers placed them in open, visually noticeable areas that serve as natural landmarks. One of the most striking elements of the game experience is the enchanting soundtrack, adapting to each biome explored. The melodies create an atmosphere of calm, enhancing the feeling of magic and discovery during your travels. However, during boss battles, the music changes radically: it becomes grandiose, tense and imbued with a subtle tragedy, adding drama to every encounter.

Plot

“Between our world and the realm beyond lies the Titan Souls, the spiritual essence of all living creatures. Scattered throughout the ancient ruins and vigilantly safeguarded by the dormant titans tasked with their protection, a solitary hero, armed with merely a single arrow, embarks on a quest to piece together the fragments of the Titan Soul in search of truth and power.”

This excerpt from the game developers, prominently displayed on the Steam main page, reveals more about the narrative than the game itself actually conveys. Essentially, it describes a mystical source that is fiercely defended by titans, situated in the liminal space between humanity and the vast unknown. A lone hero, equipped only with a bow and a few arrows, sets out on this perilous journey to seek not just strength but also deeper understanding and insight into their own existence. This overview encapsulates roughly ninety percent of the game’s storyline. However, important aspects about this hero—who they are, what drives them to pursue power, and what they truly hope to uncover—remain shrouded in mystery. The game features only one significant dialogue moment—if it can even be classified as such—where an NPC initiates a conversation, yet the protagonist remains silent and unresponsive. From this brief and unsettling interaction, one might draw the conclusion that the hero is engaging in a form of genocide, indiscriminately eliminating threats without hesitation. This raises questions about morality and the true nature of their quest. Let me elaborate on how I came to this conclusion.

Titan Souls plot

In this game, to ultimately reach the finale, players must unlock massive doors that are sealed with intricate emblems. To open these imposing doors, a specific number of Titan souls is required, which means you don’t necessarily have to defeat every single one. However, there exists a hidden ending that only becomes available after defeating each and every boss in the game. This path leads to true knowledge and unlocks an extra game mode called “Truth.” You can choose this intriguing mode in a new game, which translates all text from the Titan language into English. While this mode doesn’t completely transform your overall experience of the narrative, it certainly provides some valuable additional insights and enriches your understanding of the story. Exploring this mode can reveal nuances that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Titan Souls Conclusion

After finishing the game, I wouldn’t go as far as to call it a masterpiece, and I certainly wouldn’t rate it a perfect ten. However, if you’re feeling fatigued by massive AAA titles, if you’re just starting to explore the vast world of gaming, or if you’ve successfully tackled Dark Souls and Bloodborne and are eager for another challenge, I strongly recommend this game for you. Each type of player will discover something enjoyable within it. For newcomers, this game offers a chance to get comfortable with the gamepad while gradually enhancing their skills. Casual players will find a satisfying challenge that keeps them engaged, while hardcore gamers can truly test their limits by diving into a tough mode or a one-life challenge, where you only have a single life for the entire game. Don’t hesitate to give this game a shot; it will only take a couple of hours of your time, and its price is remarkably low, making it an easy choice for anyone looking for fun.

Viking is a beautiful, lively and seemingly promising game. Visually, everything is great, the dynamics are also okay – but there is nothing to latch onto. The plot passes by, the gameplay does not spoil with variety, and after an hour you catch yourself thinking: “Why am I playing this at all?” Maybe the brain is resting – and thank you for that. You can even come up with a new diagnosis: Altair syndrome – everything seems to work, but there is no interest in moving forward at all.

Viking: Battle for Asgard Free Steam Account

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a game about real men like this – with booze flowing like a river, enemies falling in piles, loyal comrades at your side, and if any ladies show up, they’re only in the form of goddesses. And you’re supposed to look at them with slightly narrowed eyes, as if to say, “Yeah, you’re a goddess, but I don’t have time right now.” And, of course, no chatter or dancing – that’s not a man’s thing. It’s nice to sit down and play as a hero like this: run around for a couple of hours, then look in the mirror – and there the muscles are in place, the jaw is stronger, the look is sterner. True, the forehead seems to have become a little lower… Total immersion, in general.

Plot? What about the plot – let’s start with a spectacular death. Well, like we heroically cover the retreat of our own, and then an enemy with a sword like an oar from a drakkar gives it – and hello. We fall to our knees, a couple of drops of blood drip from the wound, we look at the sky… and then a lady with a “two balls of yarn” hairdo comes out of the portal. This is, by the way, Freya herself. She gently whispers a spell, snaps her fingers – and we are back on our feet, her recitative about our great destiny sounds in our ears, and at this time we check if the sword is in place, and lazily scratch our stubble.

Here he is – the Viking Skarin. Master of the axe and sword, the hero on whom all of Scandinavia rests. And since Freya is in our hearts – then no matter what Hel appears in leather rags, we will not even look in her direction. Let’s grab some mash from the keg – and go ahead, save our homeland.

Graphics, combat and pointless quests: honestly about the Viking RPG

It is clear from the first minutes that the developers were inspired by the motto “A good day to die.” A watercolor sun slowly floats across the screen, the wind plays in the leaves of the trees, invisible birds twitter a hymn to the morning. The world seems to have come from a postcard: bearded warriors on patrol lazily wander waist-deep in thick grass, Viking armor jingles with trinkets in the sun, and the waves leisurely lick the shores strewn with the remains of ancient ships. All this is so peaceful that you involuntarily want to cheer up some drunk, ruddy, droopy-moustached man with a kick, take his place and just sip ale until the final credits.

In short, the world is visually more beautiful and larger than in Oblivion. But not everything is perfect: the character animation seems to have been copied from a quarry “BelAZ”, which suddenly embarked on the path of self-knowledge. However, you probably shouldn’t expect grace from the descendants of the inventors of horned helmets – this is not a Japanese RPG with long-haired boys. However, you won’t be able to admire the scenery for long – your soul demands action. And now you’re sneaking up on the enemy like a true Scandinavian ninja: silently, without unnecessary movements, automatically entering the “invisibility” mode. Sternly, like a man.

Graphics, combat and pointless quests

Don’t like stealth? No problem – no one is stopping you from bursting into the thick of enemies with a scream and starting to treat everyone left and right. The battlefields quickly turn into a meat grinder, where limbs fly to the sides, and weapons literally bathe in black blood. That’s it, the task is completed – you can move on, smugly straightening your shoulders. You almost want to go out into the real world and accidentally bump into a bald guy in sweatpants with your shoulder… But then there’s a thunderstorm on the horizon. Yes, literally. When the dead and other evil spirits are active nearby, the weather suddenly deteriorates – nature seems to whisper: “Get ready”.

And then they explain to us clearly (roughly, but effectively) that a hero alone is not a warrior. This is not Dynasty Warriors 9: Viking Edition. 50-70 enemies in one patrol is a standard norm. After another fatal mistake, we climb out of the portal, fused bones crunch, and a vague memory pops into our heads: “But there seemed to be a strategic element here…”

Viking Battle for Asgard review

Meanwhile, the locals continue to pretend that this is an ordinary RPG. They throw quests at us so that we don’t strain ourselves too much – mainly to beat, chop and collect as much as possible. Somewhere we extinguish a crowd of ghosts, somewhere we give a facelift to a demon – nothing complicated. Having completed all the tasks of the local idlers, with a sense of our own greatness we poke the “Attack” button on the map. And now our army is rushing forward, sweeping away everything in its path, and we are proudly behind, slapping those who are still moving.

Gameplay and Mechanics: What the Game Actually Offers

What does a typical day in the game world look like? It’s very simple: you enter another gloomy village, where everything smells of burning, fear and rotten cabbage, and the local men are crammed up to their ears in a cage. You free them – and then the magic begins. These quiet and passive poor fellows suddenly grab their swords and, shouting “For freedom!”, destroy all the oppressors in a matter of seconds. The village is saved, the sky clears up, the air becomes cleaner, the birds sing. And the Vikings… start shuffling importantly along the streets, as if they had been selling beer and growing radishes here all their lives. And so it goes – time after time. The pattern repeats itself, as if you were watching a TV series with the same episode.

What was especially “pleasing” was the game designer’s find – ubiquitous cages and poles with tied allies. Freed – received reinforcements. Almost like a surprise box, only instead of a toy there’s a bearded man with an axe. Of course, this drop of help against the backdrop of hundreds of enemies is not a panacea, but it’s nice. Plus, there are stashes of gold scattered all over the map. And these aren’t just chests in the middle of the road – everything is hidden as if the game has entered into a personal competition with you: “Let’s find out how curious and persistent you are.” Even treasure maps are not given out for free – please, buy them from a local dealer for a symbolic price. Well, at least not in a loot box, and that’s good.

Gameplay and Mechanics

At first, the combat is even enjoyable. The hero, whose name is Skarin (which already sounds threatening), has two friends in his arsenal – an axe and a sword. They look menacing, swing them effectively, and, alas, that’s all you’ll have. Don’t expect spears, crossbows or a magic whip – only cold steel and nothing more. Techniques are learned from an old grump in a certain Circle of Ancients, and despite their modest number, each one is really useful. That is, it is not like you learn a super-cool blow, and it misses one enemy out of three. Everything is fair here – if it hits, then it breaks, crumbles, breaks in half. It is especially cool to use finishing moves: if you press the buttons in time, you can create something that will make the gamepad sweat a little in your hand. And how do you like the dismemberment? Enemies do not just die, they disintegrate into parts – sometimes neatly, sometimes with artistic chaos. Someone’s head was blown off, someone was left without limbs, and someone just disappeared into dust (hello, frozen zombies). Moreover, Skarin selects a special approach to each – he will open it like an onion, then make a couple of spectacular somersaults, as if he learned from assassins and maniacs at the same time. For such performances, the game even throws in some mana — so be it, here’s a bonus, since it turned out so beautifully.

Magic here also did not disappoint. You can buy it from local NPCs — the assortment is classic genre: set on fire, freeze, paralyze. Sounds trivial? Well, no. Everything depends on the level of pumping: the radius of action, power, duration — everything increases. And, fortunately, spells can also affect your allies with a positive effect. That is, by throwing a mass cast into the crowd, you not only fry the enemies, but also heal your own. A small, but useful detail.

Here is a list of spells that most often save your skin in the heat of battle:

  • Fire Blast – Roasts everyone in the radius around, ideal for close combat.
  • Freeze – Immobilizes a group of enemies, turning them into ice statues.
  • Paralysis – Temporarily disables enemies from combat, giving them time to regroup.
  • Elemental Shield – Protects against damage and can strengthen nearby allies.
  • Lightning of Wrath – A powerful single blow, useful against strong enemies and bosses.

And then it comes — War with a capital W. The very one for which, it would seem, it would be worth starting all this. Large-scale battles, a couple thousand fighters on each side, deafening screams, swords overhead… and absolute chaos. There are six such battles in total, and at first it seems like something grandiose. But it quickly becomes clear: no tactics are provided here. Want to come from behind? Yeah, keep me informed — the script strictly dictates: “First, break down the eastern gates.” It doesn’t matter that you’ve already single-handedly mowed down half the army. Be kind enough to follow the script.

Viking Battle for Asgard System Requirements

And now — the shamans. These guys in hoods seem to have stepped off the template of the laziest design: they summon enemies over and over again, as if rewinding time. While you’re busy with them, your allies die in droves, and you’re alone again. The atmosphere of hopelessness at its maximum. And you seem like a hero, but you get to the nearest checkpoint exhausted, like a soldier who crawled through the entire war waist-deep in mud and mistakes. The dragons save the situation a little. Yes, there are dragons in the game. True, they are rather crude in appearance, stupid and without runes they do not even rise into the air. But if they decide to intervene, then the enemies fly up to the sky in a crowd. Sometimes it even seems that these creatures bring more joy to the battle than the entire army of allies put together.

The bosses also deserve a mention: huge, evil, often three heads taller than the player. Fights with them are always a separate event. Sometimes exciting, sometimes infuriating to the point of shaking because of the camera, which is lost in space, like a tourist without GPS. But if you catch the rhythm, it turns out cool. Especially if the finishing move works and the camera does not decide to go to the ceiling. And finally – the music. It is gorgeous here. Orchestral themes that make your hair stand on end and make you want to take a sword and yell something heroic. The problem is that you hear it very rarely. Basically, the game is accompanied not by epic, but by the sounds of a dense meat grinder: crunching, squealing, screaming. In a word, the acoustics of this adventure are not for everyone.

Is Viking: Battle for Asgard Worth Playing: A Review of Strengths and Weaknesses

Viking is a beautiful, cheerful and at first quite exciting game, which, alas, quickly loses the magic of novelty. Everything seems to be done at a high level: the graphics are pleasing to the eye, the combat is responsive and rich, and the open spaces beckon to be explored. But a little time passes – and you understand: there is nothing special to do here. The plot is not captivating, the tasks are repetitive, and at some point you begin to catch yourself in boredom. Perhaps it is time to introduce a new term – “Altair syndrome”: when everything seems to work, but interest fades under the weight of monotony. I want to believe that Assassin’s Creed 2 and the potential Viking 2 will not just be visual candies, but will also give an internal filling – with a plot, meaning and a lively interest in what is happening.

Is Viking Battle for Asgard Worth Playing

Pros:

  • Live, clear and intense combat
  • Large locations that you want to explore
  • Beautiful graphics
  • Epic battles with armies

Cons:

  • Gets boring quickly
  • Missions are repetitive and boring
  • You can count the number of blows and techniques on your fingers

The creators of The Dream Machine, animators Erik Zering and Anders Gustafson, evoke the image of rebels from the film Equilibrium. In that narrative, the underground fighters are mercilessly hunted down by the Grammaton Clerics for possessing art, music, and other forms of “forbidden” expression. Today, in our actual world filled with vibrant 3D images, multi-touch tablets, and advanced motion sensors, Zering and Gustafson are calmly crafting a unique game using everyday materials like cardboard, clay, and Flash technology. In a theoretically sterile future society, such an open passion for art would likely be deemed heresy, and the creators might, at best, find themselves confined to concentration camps. How fortunate we are to inhabit a world that doesn’t aspire to such sterility, where creativity can flourish without fear of oppression. In this context, the work of Zering and Gustafson serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of artistic freedom and the joyous rebellion against conformity.

The Dream Machine Free Steam Account

In addition to its unique elements of clay and cardboard, The Dream Machine incorporates a much more practical aspect: players can immerse themselves directly on the official website. The advantages are quite evident: gamers can conveniently resume their adventures from any computer with internet access, eliminating the need for developers to seek assistance from publishers. This online format truly unlocks exciting new opportunities for the genre. The dedicated team at Cockroach Inc. actively monitors player behavior in real-time, and if players frequently get stuck on a particular puzzle, adjustments can be made swiftly to enhance the experience. Moreover, the game is structured in episodic releases (with only two episodes available so far), which adds an element of surprise, making it nearly impossible to predict what thrilling challenges and twists await in future chapters due to the dynamic and evolving nature of the content. This keeps players engaged and eager for more.

The Dream Machine technology

In many respects, The Dream Machine stands out as a classic point-and-click adventure. Clay figures journey through intricately designed cardboard landscapes, searching for various items, storing them in an inventory, combining them creatively, and utilizing them at interactive points throughout the game. Traditional puppet animation adds a unique charm: characters are skillfully moved by the hands of animators, photographed against colorful cardboard backgrounds, and then brought to life on screen in a captivating way. If you initially assumed this was something innocent and trivial like The Plasticine Crow or the whimsical game Plasticine Dream, let us clarify: the Swedish creators draw inspiration from much darker sources, including horror titles such as Silent Hill 2 and The Dark Eye, the haunting adventure Sanitarium, along with the profound works of Yuri Norstein and the renowned Czech surrealist Jan Švankmajer. This blend of influences shapes a distinctive narrative experience that captivates players.

Surrealism as a concept, and the retreat into vivid surreal dreams in particular, serve as the core themes of the game. This form of escapism unfolds against a backdrop of poignant and ironic vignettes that depict the lives of desperately adult individuals, evoking the complex family dramas crafted by renowned filmmakers like Ingmar Bergman and Woody Allen, whose works often explore the intricacies of human relationships and emotional conflicts.

Gone into the world of dreams

At the core of the narrative lies a couple—Victor Nev, the main character, and his expectant wife, Alicia. They settle into an aging house, constructed in the 1920s, but it soon becomes evident that their new beginning feels quite bleak and unwelcoming. Both slightly older and weathered by life, they yearn for a fresh chapter, yet each harbors unrealized dreams from their past. Victor, a hopeless romantic, once dreamed of becoming a musician, a passion that still flickers within him. He often gazes wistfully at an old guitar resting in the corner, recalling “better times” when music filled his life with joy and possibility. In contrast, his practical wife, Alicia, is diligently pursuing a degree at university, driven by ambition and the desire for stability in their future family life.

The Dream Machine characters

To escape the harshness of their reality, they both retreat into their dreams. The very first scene of the game immerses players in one such dream where Victor finds himself on a lonely island, discovering a treasure map—an echo of his childhood fantasies filled with pirates and gold. However, instead of uncovering the riches he longs for, he awakens abruptly, faced once again with the sobering truths of his existence and the challenges ahead.

This game immerses the player in the daily grind of everyday life, where characters gradually establish contact with neighbors, get drawn into the measured rhythm of everyday life, and experience scenes of marital routine recognizable to those who have been married for more than five years. The user interacts with a wide range of characters, each with a bright personality and their own story. Although many dialogues have an optimal choice of response, nuanced conversations deeply enrich the world of the game. Thus, you can not only have a sincere conversation with a neighbor about personal trials, but also share dreams, plans, and also listen attentively to the aspirations of your marriage partner.

The Prozac of Life

Exhausting quarrels with his wife, an absurd scene with a courier who categorically refuses to carry their new purchase – a sofa – beyond the threshold, a broken elevator, as if mocking their despair, and a sluggish manager who completely forgot to hand over the keys to the apartment – all this is intertwined into a gloomy whirlpool of irritation and hopelessness. It is against this background that events begin to unfold that are far from ordinary. As the internal tension reaches its limit, it becomes clear: one of the new acquaintances is hiding something extremely disturbing behind the facade of friendliness. Victor, driven by a mixture of irrepressible curiosity and internal anxiety, penetrates the lair, where he stumbles upon a mysterious artifact – the “Dream Machine”. This discovery triggers a chain of events that opens the doors to someone else’s unconscious: here he will wander through other people’s dreams, engage in dialogue with long-dead relatives and experience a chain of surreal episodes that blur the line between reality and illusion.

The Dream Machine lies bony

As the story progresses, it takes the form of an intellectual quest, where puzzles range from intuitively simple to truly sophisticated, requiring an unconventional approach and abstract thinking. In interviews preceding the release of the first episodes, the developers reassured future players: the balance will be calibrated to satisfy both those looking for unobtrusive entertainment and those who crave deep challenges for the mind and imagination.

They almost managed to create a truly engaging gaming experience. The project combines both the simplest tasks, almost intuitive (like digging with a shovel or lubricating a jammed elevator door), and multi-stage puzzles that require the player’s ingenuity, but do not cause frustration. For example, to get to one of the secret passages, you need to complete a mini-quest: find notes with important dates, carefully analyze diary entries in search of hints and accurately arrange books on the shelf in a given sequence to open a new stage. In another scene, Victor transforms into a local doctor for three stone statues, each of which suffers from a peculiar “dysfunction”: one does not hear, another does not speak, the third is blind. Each requires special attention and a delicate approach. So, to help the head with a hearing impairment, the player must balance a weight of several objects on it – including a hammer – adding a bit of surrealism to the task. This strange, sometimes absurd way of interaction emphasizes the authors’ unconventional thinking. Despite the stylistic eccentricity of a number of decisions, the mechanics as a whole are based on sound logic and an intuitive understanding of situations.

The Dream Machine Verdict

It seems difficult to predict the direction in which the “mature and dark” story will develop if you focus only on the first two episodes. The material is so rich that it can either slide into banal patterns or rise to levels of genuine philosophical depth. However, the undoubted achievement of the Swedish team of creators is the creation of expressive, lively characters, a fascinating atmosphere and a dense, almost tangible aura of mystery – components that can hold the viewer’s attention for a long time. For a high-quality storytelling in the format of a quest, this is quite enough to involve and captivate the audience. Even two of the five episodes of “Dream Machine” make a bright and lasting impression. The skillfully executed decorations, reminiscent of handicraft, not only please the eye with their aesthetics, but also convey the semantic layers of the plot with amazing accuracy. The musical score here acts as a full-fledged co-author of the action: from meditative synthesizer melodies that awaken inner reflections, to expressive bursts of jazz and blues that fill the narrative with impulsive, lively energy.

The Dream Machine characters and holding a leaf

The Swedish developers assure us that the long-awaited final, fifth episode will be completed by this summer, with the third episode set to launch this month. Honestly, we’re eagerly looking forward to it and believe that The Dream Machine won’t be the last offering from Cockroach Inc. In the rapidly approaching digital age, such handcrafted works of art might only be found in museums—or perhaps in the collections of underground retro enthusiasts during a Clerics of Grammaton raid.

A blinding flash split the cockpit, momentarily blinding us. Just as I felt my backside catch fire, one of the three remaining engines roared back to life, breathing a spark of hope into the crew. The exhausted gunners gritted their teeth and continued to fight the waves of enemy fighters as if they were an inexhaustible swarm. They fell upon us like birds of prey, diving for a strike, jumping back to make way for new hunters. We had no time to catch our breath or lick our wounds. The skin of our plane was so riddled that it resembled a colander suitable for draining pasta. The pilot’s voice broke through the roar and tension, a strong word, followed by a hoarse warning of the upcoming maneuver. With stubborn determination, he steered the machine into a sharp decline, knocking down the gathering flames that threatened to devour us from the inside. In the cramped, pain-ringing space, the radio operator leaned over his wounded comrade, unzipped the first aid kit and, with trembling hands, tried to pull him from the clutches of death. And suddenly, unexpectedly for everyone, it became quiet. The air, just a moment ago filled with roars and shots, cleared of sound. The enemy was gone. For the first time in a long time, we could simply… breathe.

The above paragraph vividly captures the most thrilling and perilous missions in Bomber Crew—a strategic simulator set in the intense backdrop of World War II. In this engaging game, players take on the crucial role of commanding the crew of a vintage bomber as they embark on high-stakes combat missions filled with danger and excitement. Originally released for PC last year, the game has now successfully launched on popular consoles including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. This review is based specifically on the version designed for the latter console, highlighting its unique features and gameplay experience.

After a short introductory briefing, during which we are introduced to the basics of crew management, we go to the barracks, where the recruits gather. This is where our crew will finally be formed – a team of seven specialists, each of whom plays a key position: pilot, mechanic, navigator, radio operator, two gunners and a bombardier.

  • The pilot is entrusted with the fate of the entire aircraft. He takes control of the machine, chooses the flight altitude, is responsible for releasing and retracting the chassis, and also makes fateful decisions: whether to continue the mission, make an emergency landing or give the order for an emergency evacuation of the entire crew. Experience allows him to perform the most complex maneuvers, for example, an emergency dive – it can save the aircraft by knocking down the flames from the engine in a critical situation. The success of the entire mission and the lives of the team directly depend on his composure and professional training.
  • Mechanic – ensures that everything on board operates flawlessly, like a well-oiled machine. They handle repairs for any malfunctioning equipment, transfer fuel between tanks as necessary, and extinguish flames from engines equipped with built-in fire extinguishers. A skilled mechanic can expertly adjust the fuel mixture, allowing for either an increase in speed with higher fuel consumption or a slight reduction in pace to conserve precious fuel resources, optimizing efficiency in critical situations.
  • Navigator – charts the ship’s course using various navigational markers and identifies key landmarks along the way. To navigate effectively, they must have a clear view of the land, so they are not much assistance in thick clouds or harsh weather. Expertly trained navigators can even utilize the stars for orientation, enabling them to mark important points on the map. This allows you to plot your own route and make informed decisions during your journey, ensuring a safer and more efficient voyage.
  • Radio Operators serve as the backbone of radar monitoring and situational awareness in the skies. Their expertise is vital in alerting the crew to approaching enemies, accurately pinpointing their locations on the radar for effective tracking. Highly skilled radio operators can not only automatically tag targets but also summon Spitfires for backup when needed. They are also adept at requesting vital intelligence data.
  • Gunners are dedicated guardians of the airspace, working tirelessly to ensure its safety. The level of their training directly impacts shooting accuracy and the efficient use of ammunition, which can be replenished by any crew member as necessary. Particularly experienced gunners have the ability to temporarily use specialized types of ammunition, such as incendiary rounds, to enhance their effectiveness. They can also engage in various firing techniques, including precision shots and defensive maneuvers, adapting to the situation at hand to protect their aircraft and crew.
  • Bomber – a specialized unit tasked with the destruction or photographic reconnaissance of ground targets. The primary missions of bombers are strategically focused on these objectives, making them crucial in combat scenarios. They expertly manage the bomb bay doors and provide the player with an intuitive targeting reticle for effective bombing runs. Highly skilled bombers possess the remarkable ability to identify ground targets even from considerable heights and through dense clouds.

Bomber Crew customization

Each rookie pilot is automatically assigned a biography that remains fixed, unlike their appearance or name, which can be customized. This biography comprises essential details such as age, personality traits, and hometown. However, it’s important to note that none of these attributes have any significant impact on gameplay mechanics. Thanks to the character customization system, my diverse team includes a pilot named Commander from the famous “Cool Runnings,” alongside mechanic Gregory House, who was chosen solely because his biography indicated he was a doctor. Additionally, there’s the witch-gunner Akko Kagari from Little Witch Academia, included for her striking resemblance, and the iconic bald bomber Saitama from One Punch Man. It’s these small, thoughtful details that help to create a deeper connection with the crew and foster genuine empathy for their struggles and triumphs throughout our missions.

As characters take on various tasks, they will steadily gain experience, and after reaching a certain milestone, they will have the opportunity to choose a second, additional specialization. This choice is entirely up to you, so take your time to thoughtfully consider which characters can effectively step in during emergencies or unexpected situations. If you happen to make a wrong choice, don’t worry—you can easily reset and opt for a different specialization without much hassle. It’s important to keep in mind that while any character can perform actions on board, only those with the appropriate specialization will handle them with the greatest efficiency and skill. The careful distribution of roles demands that you pay close attention to each team member’s strengths and weaknesses, enabling you to make swift decisions amid the chaos of battle.

Bomber Crew Airplane Gameplay

It’s worth emphasizing that we will need to visit the recruits’ barracks on several occasions throughout the game. This necessity arises from the implementation of “roguelike” features, which mean that neither a fallen character nor a completely destroyed aircraft can be recovered once lost. As a result, you will need to carefully consider the survival odds of your characters after experiencing a plane crash. These survival chances vary significantly between land and water, and they depend on various factors, including the crew member’s gear and the specific equipment of the aircraft. The realization that your tactical decisions during combat directly influence the fate of your team adds an exhilarating layer of intensity and excitement to the overall gameplay experience, making each choice feel vital.

Your fighter jet and its loyal crew can become much more effective by acquiring the latest equipment and upgrading existing systems. However, the expansion of functionality is limited by the permissible weight that the aircraft can transport without compromising safety. This load can be increased by installing more powerful engines – a maximum of four pieces provided by the design. The hangar provides complete freedom in personalizing your aircraft. You can change its name, choose the main paint, decorate the hull with both standard emblems and unique images created using the built-in graphic editor. You can also add any text you want to give the aircraft a special character. Additionally, turret upgrades are available, including options with an automatic ammo feed, as well as installing additional weapons under the hull to increase firepower.

Bomber Crew Assembled

Inside the bomber, there is a complex set of interconnected systems, each of which plays a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of critical equipment. The power supply is not limited to powering the radar and radio station: it supports all onboard electronics responsible for navigation, communication and control, thereby increasing the combat effectiveness of the crew. The hydraulic circuit controls such mechanical units as the release of the chassis, the opening of the bomb bay doors and the rotation of the turret mounts. Thanks to the precise operation of this system, maneuverability and efficiency are ensured during combat missions. In the conditions of thin air at high altitudes, oxygen equipment becomes a life-saving element: its cylinders supply the crew with vital gas, preventing oxygen starvation. Each system, despite its reliability, is vulnerable to external damage and internal failures. However, the transition to more modern, improved modules allows to significantly increase their service life and functionality. Additional elements also play an important role: fuel systems, radars and built-in fire extinguishing equipment. These devices minimize the risk of fire, especially in engine compartments, thereby ensuring the safety of both the crew and the aircraft itself. Each operation requires a strictly defined fuel reserve, distributed between two main tanks. Damage to these can lead to a leak that can jeopardize the mission. However, with a qualified technician, the fuel can be quickly redistributed between the tanks, thereby avoiding losses. In emergency situations, it may be necessary for a technician to go out on the wing to fix a leak – a risky, but sometimes necessary measure. A safer and more effective alternative is self-sealing tanks, which can automatically seal holes, providing additional protection in flight.

Bomber Crew character

In addition, the fuselage structure can be significantly reinforced and supplemented with vital rescue equipment designed to ensure maximum safety. These include both a rescue boat and a carrier pigeon – both elements are critical to increasing the likelihood of crew survival in the event of a disaster, whether on water or on land. In addition, the aircraft is equipped with special holders for placing first aid kits. These kits play a vital role in stabilizing the condition of victims and providing emergency assistance in emergency situations. There are also parachute systems to ensure rapid evacuation in case of danger, and fire extinguishers located throughout the cabin at pre-calculated points for prompt response to fires.

Above the clouds

The accumulated intelligence data opens access to new equipment for the aircraft and crew – this data is exchanged for currency received for successfully completed missions. Both funds and intelligence information are provided as a reward for completing both primary and secondary missions, which usually include tasks such as photographing key objects or neutralizing especially dangerous enemy pilots – aces with their own health reserves. During operations, you will coordinate the actions of all team members, ensuring that everyone effectively performs their functions. Some processes, such as aircraft control, are carried out automatically, but your intervention is necessary at critical moments. Thus, navigation points for the pilot are set manually, after which they are transmitted by the navigator. In addition, it is important to mark enemy targets in a timely manner so that the gunners can work on them, guided by intelligence from the radio operator.

Particular attention should be paid to the dialogues and remarks of the crew – they provide important information about the current situation and allow you to instantly respond to emerging threats. Maintaining feedback with your team is key to a successful playthrough. However, the repetitive nature of the problems that arise and the monotony of the mission scenarios can lead to a feeling of routine over time, especially when playing for long periods of time without breaks.

Fuel is a finite resource, and as is typical in a well-designed simulator, many factors influence how much of it you use. For instance, changing altitudes, executing specific maneuvers, deploying landing gear, keeping the bomb bay open, and the mechanic’s adjustments to the fuel mixture for enhanced acceleration all contribute to increased fuel consumption. Additionally, you can effectively reduce fuel usage by having the mechanic employ a leaner fuel mixture, which can be a strategic choice during long flights.

You can operate at three designated altitudes: low, medium, and high. Initially, you’ll find that flying at low altitude is entirely manageable, allowing you to navigate without encountering significant difficulties. However, if the situation arises where you need to evade enemy fire from anti-aircraft guns and various air defense systems, you’ll need to climb to a medium altitude.

In conditions of limited visibility, it will often be extremely difficult for the navigator to navigate the terrain, which is fraught with losing the course. At the same time, a sharp drop in temperature will turn the area around the environment into an extremely hostile environment. In order to avoid encounters with enemy fighters and escape from targeted fire from anti-aircraft guns, it will be necessary to gain significant altitude. However, the situation will only become more complicated with the rise: the frost will become more severe, and the oxygen deficiency will become more noticeable, forcing the crew to actively use oxygen systems. Only full readiness of the crew for each team member. In such extreme circumstances, individual oxygen cylinders become not a luxury, but a necessity. They can be purchased in advance at your base, including them in the mandatory list of equipment. To protect themselves from the freezing cold, the crew must be provided with thermal clothing with a high level of thermal insulation. This precaution plays a critical role in maintaining health and life in extreme highlands and combat conditions.

In addition to the main campaign, the game features an exciting challenge mode. In this mode, players have the opportunity to pilot a brand-new aircraft, accompanied by a fresh crew, as they fend off relentless waves of enemies. The skies are dotted with various bonuses that can restore character health, repair bombers, refill fuel tanks, enhance crew experience, and offer other helpful advantages. As characters engage in aerial combat, they can level up in real-time, acquiring new skills and abilities while soaring through the air. Our goal is to tackle these waves of challenges, complete diverse tasks, accumulate points, and strive to set new records on the leaderboard. While this mode might not provide the same depth and engagement as the campaign, many players may find it a delightful way to spend their time and enjoy a different aspect of the game.

This game is anything but ordinary—perhaps even entirely exceptional in its approach. The review won’t follow the typical breakdown of gameplay, story, graphics, music, and so forth. First, because the game can be completed in about 40 minutes, and second, because every element is deeply intertwined and functions harmoniously together. Press Any Button stands as a vibrant example of how games can truly embody art (for anyone who might still question that notion). Just like any genuine form of art, you don’t necessarily need a massive budget or a large team; sometimes, all that’s required is a creative idea and the talent to realize it effectively. This game proves that passion and originality can shine through, making a lasting impact on players and showing that art can flourish in unexpected places.

The game was entirely crafted by a single individual, Evgeny Zubko, and made its debut on Steam in January 2021. A sequel titled Many Buttons to Press exists, but it has been met with overwhelmingly negative reviews. According to player feedback, it shares little in common with the original, so we won’t delve into that further. So, what’s the premise? We find ourselves as participants in an experiment presented in an engaging game format. Initially, our task is simply to press a button whenever a block passes through a green zone, which is… not particularly thrilling.

58 minutes? Well, thanks for that… The dynamic shifts dramatically when the main character, AI, an artificial intelligence running the test, makes its entrance. It decides to experiment with game design while also interacting with the player. From this point on, the game revolves around these two core elements: we complete a level, we engage in conversation, we complete another level, and so on. It’s straightforward, yet remarkably effective, as the gameplay evolves based on our discussions. Each interaction influences how the game unfolds, making each playthrough unique. The simplicity of the mechanics contrasts with the depth of the dialogue, creating a compelling experience that keeps players invested.

Press Any Button game

The gameplay is still quite basic: we must catch the falling blocks before they hit the bottom of the screen. Aside from a few mini-games sprinkled throughout, this remains our primary task until the very end. Yet the developer performs remarkable feats, maximizing the potential of this simple concept in impressive ways. The gameplay is deeply integrated with the narrative, beautifully illustrating it at every turn. When summer is mentioned, vibrant cherries and juicy watermelons appear, blocking our platforms while a gentle summer rain creates an immersive backdrop. As we shift to winter, whimsical snowmen freeze the platforms beneath them, adding another layer of challenge. Various objects like bouncing balls, sturdy columns, quirky accordions, explosive dynamite, and ticking bombs each behave uniquely, complicating the game while also advancing the story in engaging ways.

Is playing Press Any Button challenging? Well, it really depends on your luck. The blocks are generated randomly, and there are moments when you might find it physically impossible to clear them all. This can be quite annoying, especially when you’re trying to progress, but the game and its various segments are so brief that you likely won’t have time to get frustrated. Plus, the AI is still learning the ropes of game design, so a little patience and understanding really go a long way, don’t you think? The mini-games are genuinely entertaining and bring a lot of charm to the experience. For instance, at one point, we get a quick retelling of the story of Koschei, where you must catch a hare, shoot a duck, break an egg, and snap a needle all in one go. Another time, we tackle the classic glass dilemma, which is either half empty or half full, and all you need to do is hold the glass under the drips. And let’s not forget the hilarious attempt to help the AI compose music! It results in a rather goofy and strange, yet oddly heartfelt melody, which truly enhances its character and makes the experience memorable.

Press Any Button game dialogue

At a certain moment during the discussion about music, the game begins to reveal its true depth and complexity. First, the somewhat monotonous opening melodies give way to the breathtaking Danse Macabre by Saint-Saëns, marking a turning point where the soundtrack elevates the entire experience. From that point onward, there are no more lackluster compositions to detract from the immersion. The role of classical music in games is a subject deserving of its own exploration; sometimes it is masterfully integrated (as seen in Horace), acting as a compelling tool that deeply resonates with players on an emotional level. Moreover, the conversations grow increasingly profound and thought-provoking as they unfold. The concept of a robot engaging with a human and posing seemingly innocent yet deeply challenging questions—laying bare the absurdities and contradictions of human existence—is hardly original (and yes, I must bring up Horace again). Yet here, it reaches a new dimension, as we, the players, are compelled to respond with a firm “yes” or “no.” A simple glass is one thing, but the AI probes into much more difficult, painful, and nuanced themes that resonate on a personal level.

There exists another set of questions where AI inquires about itself. These questions come with an astonishing innocence and a profound trust in your reply. It feels disheartening to let it down, even when the honest answer might be more appropriate. Many can relate to this sensation. They peer earnestly into your eyes, silently conveying: “But I’m a good one, right? Truly? And surely you’re my friend, aren’t you?” Yet, deep down, you find them unbearable, and you aren’t their friend at all, which leaves you feeling quite awkward and a touch ashamed. It’s a strange discomfort to confront. Nevertheless, AI isn’t easily offended; it typically steers the conversation back to normal after just a couple of lines. The dialogue is completely linear, lacking any choices or alternative endings, but that doesn’t lessen the sense of engagement you feel. It’s fascinating how these interactions unfold.

Press Any Button game gameplay

At a certain moment in the game—without revealing exactly when it happens—it ramps up in difficulty, and the AI becomes increasingly introspective (all set to the breathtaking “Connection” by Brian Boyko). It feels almost like more than just gameplay; it’s easy to believe that someone on the other side of the screen is genuinely experiencing distress. This immersive effect is largely achieved through the game’s direct engagement with the player, fostering a sense of connection that transcends traditional gaming experiences. Indeed, you can empathize with the characters as you would with yourself, yet it’s still not entirely the same as being actively involved in the unfolding action. The principle that allows games to evoke deeper emotions than films or books is brought to its fullest expression here. The crisis eventually resolves, the AI seeks forgiveness, and a profound catharsis follows, leaving players with lingering emotions long after the game concludes. This blend of narrative depth and emotional resonance makes the experience truly unforgettable.

This is a game about life. About the changing seasons, about music and beauty. About friendship and loneliness. About depression, war, death – and about coming back to life. And it’s also a game about destroying blocks before they touch the bottom of the screen.
