Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2
The sniper profession is one of the most difficult and demanding in the army. It’s not just about accurate shooting: you need to be able to choose cover, blend in with the surroundings, lie motionless for hours, sometimes even days, waiting for the perfect moment for a single shot. In real life, sniper work is all about waiting, concentration, and patience. But in video games, all of this usually remains behind the scenes. After all, creating a game where you spend most of the time just lying in the bushes is not the easiest (or most fun) task. Nevertheless, attempts to convey the atmosphere of sniper work have been made more than once. One of them was Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 – the second game from the Polish studio City Interactive, which decided to experiment with the genre again.

The first part of Sniper: Ghost Warrior from Polish developers, frankly, did not cause much enthusiasm. The game was criticized for literally everything – boring and monotonous gameplay, dull linearity of levels, and it is better not to remember the bugs at all. But we must give credit to the authors: they heard the criticism. They promised to improve, to approach the second part wisely – and, judging by the protracted release, they really tried. Initially, the game was planned to be released a year ago, but the deadline was pushed back more than once. Unfortunately, the plot was left out again. Inspiring examples like Spec Ops: The Line or Brothers in Arms, which proved that even in a military shooter you can tell a deep, emotional story, were ignored here. Yes, in the middle of the campaign there are attempts to find something serious, but they do not last long – everything quickly degenerates into another action movie about “evil terrorists” and saving the world. Of course, there is some cranberry in there too: somewhere in the Siberian wilderness, weapons of mass destruction are stolen, Russian heroes love vodka… well, you get the idea.
The main character – who would have thought – is a sniper. His name is Cole Anderson, and he serves in a special forces unit that carries out missions all over the world. At first, he is sent to the jungles of the Philippines, then he remembers an old mission in Sarajevo, and in the end he storms the peaks in Tibet. The game has a rich geography, but it takes a maximum of six hours to complete the entire campaign. Not enough, of course. But you can replay your favorite episodes – however, this will not make much of a difference in gameplay. Both the Serbs and modern action films are all carbon copies. Thanks to the scriptwriters.

Realistic Sniper Rifle Shooting in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 – Hardcore Shooter
When it comes to sniper games, most gamers immediately recall the Sniper Elite series from Rebellion. These guys are famous for their spectacular “X-ray camera” and pretty lively gameplay, albeit with an arcade twist. But there is another way – more hardcore, closer to reality. This is what the developers from City Interactive chose when working on Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2. Here, a sniper is not a superhero with optics, but a fighter who must take into account every little thing before pulling the trigger.
The bullet in this game does not fly in a straight line – its path depends on the wind, distance, angle at which you have to shoot, the shooter’s fatigue, and even whether there is an obstacle between him and the target. Of course, they did not reach absolute realism: parameters such as derivation, air humidity and atmospheric pressure were left out, and the wind and distance are shown automatically. But even without this, especially on a high difficulty level, an accurate shot is already an achievement. You have to estimate where the bullet will go, keep the trajectory in mind and make corrections “by eye”.
On easy and medium levels, the difficulty is greatly simplified. The game even suggests the point of impact – and then this whole simulation loses its meaning. But if you remove all the assistants, the sniper part of the game begins to reveal itself in all its glory. This is no longer a shooting gallery, but a real test of composure and skills. In addition to this, your partner – the observer – does not let you get bored: sometimes tasks require not only accuracy, but also a creative approach. For example, knocking down a searchlight with a shot to cover the advance of a group, or hitting two enemies with one bullet. Sometimes you have to shoot at a person who holds a hostage to his temple – and here a mistake is unacceptable.
The player is given a little freedom – you can try to act in your own way. But the game does not encourage initiative: if you go beyond the plan, you will find yourself in a situation where you are up against an entire enemy squad. And no one will load a checkpoint or return you to the menu with the inscription “mission failed” – you will simply be forced to pay for your mistakes on the spot. Such a “natural” system of punishments makes the passage much more intense, especially if you want to complete the mission according to all the rules. By the way, in reality, snipers are not just “long-range shooters”. These are elite fighters who act covertly, work mainly in pairs and take on extremely important targets: officers, commanders, heavy weapons crews. Their main weapon is not only a rifle, but also patience, endurance and the ability to dissolve in the surrounding world. Shooting from such distances as 800-1000 meters is not just a technique, but a whole art. Especially if you remember the recent record: Australian Scott Smith was able to hit a target from a distance of 2815 meters — using a Barrett M82A1, a powerful large-caliber rifle.
In addition to classic snipers, there are also so-called marksmen — support snipers. These are fighters who are part of regular units and help their comrades with fire from a distance. A classic example is a soldier with an SVD in a motorized rifle squad. Unlike sniper-saboteurs, marksmen move more often and fight in a more active manner. Their goal is to suppress enemy firing points and ensure fire superiority. There is also a third type — police snipers, most often part of special forces. They have a different specificity: they have to work at short distances, in urban conditions. But the accuracy required is extreme. One shot — and it must be absolutely accurate in order to instantly neutralize the threat. No room for error, no second chance.
Ghost Warrior 2 tries to convey all these aspects at least partially. And if the developers had focused exclusively on the sniper component, the game could have become a cult classic. But, alas, they decided to add stealth and standard linear missions, where you have to act like an ordinary soldier. Stealth itself is not done badly, but it is too banal: you sneak, hide, sneak up on another sentry with a knife… all this reminds of dozens of other games. If you want, play hide and seek, or if you want, cut everyone down in a row. True, it will not always be possible to kill everyone – the forces are often too unequal, and the hero dies from a couple of bullets. He is not Superman. Visually, the game also leaves an ambiguous impression. From a distance, the picture is still okay, but if you get closer, the textures are soapy, the facial animation is creepy, and the explosions are more reminiscent of fireworks from old films. The sound is nothing. Silencers are present on almost all weapons, so there is no pleasure from the sound of shots. It is especially offensive for CryEngine 3 – the logo in the splash screen seems to mock itself. It promises something spectacular, but in the end we get a picture that already looked outdated at the time of release.
The developers tried to diversify the game with a “bullet cam” technique – a slow-motion bullet flight, as if emphasizing the importance of each shot. But after Sniper Elite V2 with its “x-ray” showing how a bullet breaks bones, this no longer makes a special impression.
Nevertheless, despite all the shortcomings, Ghost Warrior 2 has its own charm. Those who really want to try themselves in the role of a sniper will appreciate the attention to detail, thoughtful ballistics and the need to act accurately and deliberately. Yes, the game lacks polish. Yes, it could be better. But if you are attracted by the idea of one shot – one kill, if you like to track the target for a long time, wait for the perfect moment – then perhaps this game will give you those emotions that you will not find in arcade shooters.
Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 – Is It Worth Playing in 2025?
Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is a game that does not claim to be the shooter of the year, but is still capable of giving pleasant emotions to fans of the sniper theme. Yes, it is far from ideal, but in its niche it is quite viable and even enjoyable – if you know what to expect from it. The main advantage is, of course, the shooting mechanics themselves. The developers have tried hard here: taking into account breathing, bullet trajectory, distance and wind have their place, which adds a little more depth to the gameplay and requires at least some planning, and not the banal “aim – shoot”. This is especially felt in the first hours of the game, when you are just getting into the rhythm and trying to get used to this more thoughtful pace.
True, the joy of the mechanics is quickly overshadowed by the length of the single-player campaign. It ends almost when you have just begun to get real pleasure. But if after the final credits there is a feeling of incompleteness – no problem. The game has a multiplayer mode where you can take part in duels with other players. Here, everything depends on how much you like the competitive format – online battles can be addictive, especially if you want to compare skills with live opponents. We should give credit to the developers – they clearly tried to take into account the criticism that fell on the first part. In many respects, Ghost Warrior 2 really feels like a more mature and thoughtful project. The work on the mistakes was not in vain, and it shows.
However, there are some downsides. The graphics, frankly speaking, were outdated even before the release – especially compared to other games of that time. Some textures and lighting look simply poor. The levels are short and linear, leaving almost no room for improvisation. And the plot… well, it looks more like an excuse to change locations than a full-fledged story. The heroes’ motivations are conditional, the dialogues are formulaic, and the turns of events sometimes cause only bewilderment.
Pros:
- The sniper shooting process itself is well implemented – with adjustments for wind, distance and breathing
- The balance between realism and spectacle allows you to enjoy the gameplay without unnecessary boredom
- The ability to compete in multiplayer after completing the campaign
Cons:
- The graphics are very outdated and do not make an impression
- The levels are short and too linear, almost without freedom of action
- The plot is absurd and does not evoke emotions
