Niche — a genetics survival game

Niche – a genetics survival game offers an intriguing survival adventure where peculiar creatures thrive on a remote island. The gameplay is meticulously crafted around the principles of genetics and species interbreeding. How long will you be able to ensure the ongoing survival of your unique species? There’s only one way to truly find out the answer.

Do you recall the game called Spore from the once-prominent company Electronic Arts? I certainly do. It feels like ages ago—back in 2008—when Spore became my absolute favorite simulation game. It allowed players to unleash their creativity by designing creatures of any form, ranging from adorably quirky to downright terrifying and hideous. Then, you could guide these creations through five fascinating stages of evolution. However, as the title suggests, this discussion is about a different game entirely. So, why did I bring up Spore in the first place?

The reason is quite simple: the developers of Niche – a genetics survival game, Flox Studios Ltd., have openly stated that Spore served as their inspiration. My review of Niche will delve into whether they’ve managed to create something that captures a similar essence or if they’ve forged their own unique path in the gaming world.

What is a niche and what is its essence?

Niche is an original survival game, the most beloved by children due to the laws of genetics and combining elements of a turn-based strategy and a life simulator. The player will lead the development of a unique species of creatures that look like heroes from beautiful anime – among them there are amazing and non-standard images, like those you see in the image on the left.

During the game, you will deal with most challenges: from attacks by predators and harsh climatic conditions to outbreaks of diseases, poisonous flora and other dangers that can threaten the existence of your species. The main task is to achieve the sustainability and prosperity of your animal community in an ever-changing and often hostile ecosystem.

A feature of Niche that distinguishes it from other projects in the genre is a realistic genetic system. With its help, the player can crossbreed creatures with different sets of genes, obtaining offspring with new, improved traits that can significantly increase their chances of survival in difficult conditions.

Overall, the integration of the scientific genetic model into the gameplay is implemented at a very decent level – for this, the developers of Niche deserve special praise.

The game offers two distinct modes: story mode and free play mode. In the first, players experience an interesting story of a creature named Adam, who is unexpectedly separated from his family by a formidable bird of prey. Having made a daring escape from the clutches of the enemy, Adam finds himself on a mysterious, unfamiliar island full of mysteries and dangers. In the process of learning about the new world, he deals with a creature of the opposite sex named Eve, and their meeting becomes the beginning of the best journey together.

Fun fact: the heroes are called Adam and Eve – either by chance or deliberate symbolism of the developers, which gives their story additional depth and evokes philosophical reflections on the nature of origin.

In the sandbox mode, players are given the opportunity to vary the difficulty level and choose one of five climate zones, each of which has its own unique flora and fauna. Despite these settings, the key mechanics of the game remain stable, allowing players to plunge headlong into the chosen environment, explore detailed landscapes and interact with many special creatures.

Gameplay

The gameplay felt rather tedious and uninspired. Each animal is given merely three steps per day, and that number decreases if the weather turns too hot or too cold. To survive, your species must forage for food from various sources, fend off predators, and ensure reproduction. Essentially, that’s where the gameplay begins and ends. The absence of a final goal is, in my opinion, a major flaw, though perhaps sandbox games just aren’t my preferred genre.

Take “Life in Bunker,” for instance, another survival title that we reviewed. In that game, the primary objective was to endure until the bunker doors opened, granting survivors the chance to step back into the outside world. Similarly, in “Spore,” your creatures strive to reach the fifth stage of evolution and eventually venture into space. However, “Niche” lacks such ambitions or grand objectives. The game simply concludes as soon as the last member of your species perishes, which means it only provides a couple of hours of playtime at most. This lack of depth leaves players wanting more, making it hard to stay engaged for long.

Niche Review Conclusion – Is It Worth Playing?

Ultimately, Niche serves as a rather distant prototype of Spore. Its visuals are captivating and colorful, but that’s where the appeal ends. The gameplay quickly becomes monotonous and repetitive. Day after day, you forage for food, occasionally engage in mating (just like in real life, right?), and sometimes fend off predators before meeting your inevitable demise. Right now, the game costs 389 rubles on Steam, which I find to be quite steep for what it offers. If you’re considering it for some casual gaming, I suggest waiting for a sale or discount to get better value. In my personal view, the game is worth no more than 50% of its price, thanks to its interesting genetic mechanics and the charming design of its worlds and creatures, which are visually appealing but lack depth in gameplay.
