Satellite Reign
Created by Bullfrog Productions in 1993 and 1996, Syndicate and Syndicate Wars continue to be considered some of the best cyberpunk games ever made. These popular games are true benchmarks of the genre – imagine X-COM mixed with a colorful, neon-drenched future full of cyborgs and ruthless corporate structures. Players step into the shoes of powerful syndicate leaders, tactically conquering territory across a massive map while controlling a squad of cloned agents in real-time tactical battles. These agents engage in intense combat and can even control the minds of unsuspecting pedestrians, adding more thinking and tactics to the gameplay.
In 2013, crowdfunding platform Kickstarter became a beacon of hope for a group of former Bullfrog employees who banded together to form 5 Lives Studios. They successfully raised £460,000 to develop Satellite Reign, a spiritual successor that aims to capture the essence of Syndicate Wars. The developers promised their fans a cyberpunk paradise filled with rich narrative and interesting gameplay. As is often the case in the industry, they soon entered a lengthy “early access” phase, during which they sought community feedback to refine their vision. The game has recently finally emerged from this phase, but it may have done so too early, leaving some fans wondering whether the experience fully lives up to the legacy of its predecessors.

Satellite Reign is not just the best successor to the popular Syndicate and Syndicate Wars, but a modern interpretation of their ideas, reworked taking into account the current realities of the genre. The gameplay has retained the core of the previous mechanics, conveying the spirit and style of the originals, but with a number of significant updates. At the strategic level, the player will have to collect valuable resources, steal experimental technologies and recruit talented scientists to conduct scientific research. These actions open access to an extensive arsenal – from high-tech weapons and advanced gadgets to unique implants that significantly enhance each operative. The game world will have shootouts and a variety of missions, each of which requires a thoughtful approach and subtle tactical calculation.
However, the ambitions of the project are now focused not on global leadership, but on control over one huge metropolis. This city, filled with life and visual saturation, is under the rule of a corporation that has turned immortality into a luxury item. Now influential people can transfer their consciousness from one body to another, bypassing the boundaries of death. A new social model is emerging, in which the almost infinite is formed, and the very essence of personality, power and existence in a digital society raises more and more philosophical questions. Naturally, she now possesses the power in the city, controlling every aspect of its operations. We represent a young yet promising syndicate that has also developed advanced consciousness transfer technology and is eager to eliminate the competition: our mission is to infiltrate the “immortals'” high-security research lab and deploy a destructive virus that could cripple their operations.
Additionally, to achieve our objectives, there’s really no need to seize territories, manage taxes, or influence public sentiment through traditional means. Although the developers initially promised a different approach to gameplay. Furthermore, in a previous interview, they confidently stated that players would be able to spread propaganda among the citizens to undermine the rival’s influence and earn the trust of the populace, fostering loyalty and support. In this scenario, if our agents find themselves under pressure from adversaries, we can rely on bystanders to come to their aid, creating a dynamic interaction where the community plays a crucial role in the unfolding story.
None of this was present in the release. Ultimately, the task is to gather money, complete various missions, and unlock access to the next part of the city. This cycle repeats endlessly until we finally achieve our overarching objective. The city is expansive, stunning, and filled with life, yet it feels inherently dead. People wander about, occasionally resting on benches or chatting quietly, but they only react to gunshots: during violent confrontations with enemies, your danger level rises sharply, causing bystanders to flee in terror at the sight of agents. It’s a bizarre dance of fear and survival. Yet, if you holster your weapon and wait a few minutes in a secluded corner, everything resets—you’re off the hook, and neither the guards nor the pedestrians recall how just moments ago, you were the source of panic and chaos.
At the checkpoints between city areas, those trying to cross without the right papers are frequently shot, their desperate attempts met with harsh consequences. The city thrives on this constant tension, where every interaction is laced with the potential for violence.

In this sprawling metropolis, we have almost unlimited freedom to act as we see fit. Four agents – an assault trooper, a support specialist, a cyber hacking master, and a marksman – move silently through the bustling streets, masterfully opening ATMs to continuously replenish the general supply of cash. In parallel, they develop tactics for the next intrusion – be it a bank, a drone factory, a police station, an army facility, an elite hotel, or the headquarters of an influential corporation. Each district of this city is a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Infiltrating these locations brings valuable resources: funding, experimental technology, or improved equipment for future operations.
Formally, we have complete freedom to choose our approach to completing tasks. But in practice, a mindless onslaught almost always ends in failure, especially in the initial stages, when our agents are equipped with only basic camouflage cloaks and dark glasses. Their protection leaves much to be desired. Enemies act ruthlessly, often calling for reinforcements and trying to overwhelm with numerical superiority. That is why stealth, ingenuity and proper planning play a key role – only with their help can you succeed, avoid senseless casualties and ensure that missions are carried out with maximum efficiency.
Overall, it’s wise to steer clear of confrontations—this is arguably the most frustrating part of Satellite Reign. Your characters and their foes frequently get caught on environmental objects or simply bump into walls, creating a sense of clumsiness. The complete destructibility that fans loved in Syndicate Wars is notably absent, yet enemies entrenched behind cover can spend an eternity exchanging fire, even if they’re missing the target entirely, making encounters feel tedious. These clone agents operate without independent thought, lacking any real intelligence. There’s also no option for an active pause to manage commands effectively amid the surrounding chaos, which can be quite overwhelming. As a result, executing intricate tactical strategies, such as having a soldier create a diversion while a hacker infiltrates and a sniper provides cover from above, becomes exceedingly difficult and frustrating for players who crave strategic depth.
Ultimately, there are usually two paths to choose from. The first is the more artistic option: you find yourself deeply engaged in an elaborate game of cat and mouse with the patrols. You meticulously map out their movements, disable security cameras, and devise a plan to stealthily approach your objective without drawing attention. For instance, you might crawl through the narrow ventilation ducts or scale the rooftop to gain a better vantage point, then cleverly descend on cables (just make sure not to land at the feet of the unsuspecting guards below. A hacker paired with a skilled sniper can, in theory, operate quite effectively together. The hacker gains access to the security systems and unlocks the gates, while the sniper employs temporary invisibility to line up and take precise shots with a silenced rifle, ensuring complete stealth.
The artistry displayed by the creators evokes nothing but admiration and nostalgic tears among devoted fans of “Blade Runner.” Their work encapsulates the essence of a world where technology and humanity intersect in profound ways, reminding us of the beauty found in both creativity and storytelling.
Trying to stay hidden? Good luck with that — the place is crawling with surveillance, and not every camera or patrol can be bypassed. To make things worse, you can’t even save your progress during a break-in. So, forget stealth. Sometimes, brute speed is your best ally. Kick the door down, drown out the shouting and gunfire with your own momentum, and make a beeline for your target. Grab what you came for, then vanish — back onto the rooftop or down a vent, bullets slicing the air behind you. Once you’ve shaken the pursuit, melt into the city and stay off the grid until the heat cools off and the alert level resets.
Urban Fugitives
Yet, despite its shortcomings (or rather, areas that need refinement), Satellite Reign truly enchants with its remarkable ability to embody the essence of the original Syndicate series while capturing the vibrant spirit of authentic cyberpunk. We mentioned that the city is vast and visually stunning, but it’s an experience that’s best appreciated firsthand. Everywhere you look, the environment is alive with neon lights and shimmering rain; captivating dancers sway gracefully on gigantic billboards, hover cars zip by effortlessly along the bustling streets, and a myriad of eclectic shops, banks, terminals, and neon signs surround you at every turn. Initially, you’ll find yourself eager to photograph all this breathtaking scenery, wanting to capture the essence of this dazzling world.
However, as you wander through these vibrant streets, it’s wise to switch to a special scanning mode. This unique perspective allows you to discover hackable devices and reprogrammable systems hidden in plain sight, as well as individuals you can bribe to become your loyal scientific allies, helping you navigate this intricate urban landscape more effectively. Or take out rivals completely. Just like in the Syndicate series, we’re not afraid to get our hands dirty—there’s bribery, digging up dirt, blackmail, and even contract hits. Instead of saving up for a ticket to another part of the city, it’s wiser to accept jobs from the criminal underworld; the game offers little in the way of choice. Yet, sometimes we must make tough decisions about whether to eliminate someone or offer them a bribe.
Moreover, as you navigate the bustling streets of the city, your skilled hacker can approach any unsuspecting bystander and infiltrate their mind to recruit them into your growing team, even if just temporarily. With enough finesse and expertise, you might even manage to sway an armed guard who’s patrolling a nearby bank to join your cause, turning former adversaries into valuable allies in your quest for power and control. The same concept can be seen in Syndicate Wars, but in Satellite Reign the player can only control one agent at a time – it will not be possible to assemble a full team of followers here. However, by hacking the consciousness of passers-by, you can form a kind of army of clones, ready to immediately come to the rescue and replace fallen fighters.
But if the hacker is caught by a patrolman, he will have to immediately capitulate – he will be searched to the skin, a significant fine and, finally, an unpleasant meeting with the butt of a service weapon. Satellite Reign offers a truly immersive and deep interaction with the agent management system. Each of them has their own set of abilities that you can develop and adapt to your play style. Selecting clones with unique bonuses adds an extra element of strategy and makes each mission unique. The process of strengthening operatives with advanced weapons and the latest gadgets brings real satisfaction. In addition, you have the ability to implant implants in different parts of the body, creating agents of narrow specialization. Weapon modifications – be it silencers, optical sights or other enhancements – allow you to create truly individual equipment. However, all this will require not only collecting resources, but also thoroughly researching advanced technologies, as well as establishing a clear production chain so that your operations run like a well-oiled machine.
Satellite Reign Verdict
After their Kickstarter campaign, 5 Lives Studios (which includes some of the talented creators behind the iconic Syndicate) successfully raised just over $700,000. For context, the developers of Shadowrun Returns attracted nearly $2 million, showcasing the varying levels of support for different projects.
This modest budget is quite evident throughout the game: everything outside of the core gameplay mechanics is visually appealing yet remains fairly simple. However, within those mechanics, the skilled developers have crafted an adventure that is rich in narrative depth. The unpredictability and variety present throughout the game effectively compensate for any shortcomings, including the frequent references to various video games, which sometimes overshadow original ideas.
Ultimately, the tactical game genre is not so expansive that it can overlook Satellite Reign — a standout title and one of the delightful surprises of this year. It brings a fresh experience that captures the attention of players and reminds us of the potential within this niche.
A cyberpunk adventure with new canons: instead of the classic set of plot cliches and bright archetypes, the focus here is on carefully constructed, deep gameplay, which takes on all the drama of the genre.
